If it's not a roo, why do these girls look so different? Barnvelder Q.

Since I'm one of the "They"s, what we said was that it was a hen if it had DOUBLE lacing. Not if it had single lacing. The picture you posted earlier showed a chicken with marks on its feathers but it was not light/clear enough to see the lacing; we said that if it was double laced it had to be a hen. In Barnevelders, since hens are the only ones who can show double lacing, that trumps anything else (red comb, etc.). You also didn't post any pictures comparing it to your other one.

Nobody on the earlier thread was ignoring anything; Barnevelders are a unique case where lacing is very determinate of gender.

Since you want a cockerel and got a cockerel, I hope you won't ask the seller for a refund.

I didn't originally want a cockerel but when it was coming up I asked mother if she wanted to breed them and she said yes. I decided not to ask for the refund (I was going to if she didn't want to breed them), haha. But anyway.

Yes you did say double lacing and I said I checked and it didn't look like it did, but got no reply - so thought I'd post again.

I never said you were ignoring anything...? I'm sorry if you feel like I was attacking you, I wasn't. I just wasn't sure.

Aloha,

I look at the combs waddles, and feathers in my birds. I would also use the voice and times feet to determine the sex of my chicks/maturing birds. I do that by force crouching them. The boys sound rapidity and the girls sound a little higher in pitch. (mind you not always effective though) But some breeds are determined by other visual qualities and leg coloring, it just depends on the breed. But looking at your chook the waddles/comb/legs color are much pronounced in the one behind. So I have to just go on that and I will have to say Roo! If that is what you were going for i have to say congrats! Socialize with him to keep him as a cuddlier to you so he stays sweet and calm. I dislike roos that bit the hand that feeds um....
