if my neighbor's dog jumps their fence and attacks my chicken coop

I think that the problem isn't that the dog is retarded but that it's owners are. While I have practiced SSS in the past now I would prefer to capture the offending animal, if it can be accomplished without injury to me, and take the animal to the pound. It is an inconvenience to the owners and in many areas there is a cost involved in reclaiming their animal. While you would think common sense should prevail, I haven't found trying to talk to pet owners to be very effective. Inconveniencing them seems to have more affect.

I was just put in a simular spot. The first of the month I moved and a neighbor down the road has (had) 2 mastiffs, that were mean. Most of the other neighbors told me to be careful of them for they would kill my dogs, cats and chickens. All the owner would do is laugh. Yesterday we had a BBQ to meet the neighbors. Just as we started playing horseshoes, we saw the dogs going after a calf across the road. I told the owner to call his dogs off and he said NO WAY, the dogs are doing thier thing and they need to eat. Mama cow was doing her thing to keep the dogs off the calf, which gave me time to get to my gun. I walked to the fence and again told him to call the dogs off. Again he told me to commit an act upon myself. I think he now belives me when I say a predator
will be shot on sight. The sheriff wanted to see the gun that killed the dogs. Then gave the dog owner a ticket for have his dogs off his property, owning mean dogs, and no tags on the dogs. Thanked me for clean kills on the dogs. Then arrest the owner for threating my life and the lives of my family and all at the BBQ. I told the deputy he didn't have to do that, for the same thing would happen to him if he came looking for revenge. 2 less mean dogs and 1 less bully in the neighborhood.
I hope when he gets out of jail he has sense enough to realized I mean what I said about predators. At least I will have a good self defense case.
Gramps taught me to take no BS from anyone and Uncle Sam showed me how to do it affectly.

I think your stick on the coop would be a perfect solution.

They say a word to the wise is sufficient. Are you listening? With all due respect. How many times does one have to repeat a warning?

Ya all may be manly men and all that. However, even though these are domestic animals and small or large…when ...ANY....animal is in a frenzy or is frightened…..you are going to lose the battle of “manhandling”.

I will tell you for sure, that you will most certainly have some wounds that could well incapacitate you or be reminders of your “bravery for the rest of your life. I am sure there are many others here that have stories to tell.

We humans are ill equipped to do hand-to-hand combat with the other creatures of the world. I believe that is why we were given a brain. BUT….and that is a big but….if you insist, be prepared for the consequences. That is of the physical and the law abiding ones.

I agree. As I have told my dh many times, there is no such thing as a stupid dog just stupid owners. As with kids they will do what they are allowed and if taught no different they assume that is what they are suppose to do. A flock of chickens we had several years ago was massacred by our neighbors dog. The dog had proceeded to chase the ducks and geese of the neighbor on the other side of them. She called animal control. He told my dh about it and went on to call her several vulgar names for calling on him. That jus goes to show you the ignorance of some people. I totally agree with the inconvenience factor. It will only become a big deal to them when they are inconvenienced by it. I'm not sure what kind of dog you are dealing with and how people friendly he is but I would pack him up and bring him to the spca every time he was in your property. I wonder with the sss if it leaves the owners to think "oh they must of run off" and they go get another one and your problems start all over again. I have two dogs and a foster and while I love them and think they are great I would be a fool to think everyone else will feel the same. Unfortunately not everyone sees that.
