The thing is though that some of these hatcheries have been selling these "Ameraucana" birds since before Ameraucanas became a breed.
Murray McMurray states that they have been. Back in the day the blue egg layers were all sold as Araucana. At some point they split into what would become Araucanas and Ameraucanas.
These hatcheries were selling what was known as Ameraucanas at the time. I'd seen both types sold as such and such "the easter egg" chickens but none where called Easter Eggers.
When Ameraucanas finally got recognized by the APA some of these hatcheries had been selling these birds for a decade or decade + under that name.
It's not like they came along and decided hey let's call our EEs Ameraucanas and scam people. They just continued selling their same birds under the same name they always had.
Easter Eggers didn't become their own thing until after Ameraucanas got recognized and hatcheries didn't change with the times.
Should they? Yes, but I understand how things got to this point. It wasn't fraudulent as much as not following what the APA set forth. IMO
Ah well, Murray McMurray only started selling their "Ameracaunas" in the 80s, so they certainly don't have time as their excuse. And I do know from personal experience that Easter Egger has been a colloquial term for any chicken that lays blue or green eggs since I was a baby, at least, which is why I couldn't help laughing when I read that Cackle Hatchery had the cajones to trademark the term.

Good grief, the nonsense businesses get away with!
