If you could breed pure breeds

I like all breeds, mixed, or purebred.

If I were to breed purebreds I'd go for:

Black Sumatras

Orpingtons

Malays

(Breeds I'd like to create)

Games(Debating on type, but leaning towards Flarry Eyed Greys)

Silkies

I'm one of the rare chicken keepers who dislikes crests, boots, silky fluff and curls. I like my hens sturdy and perfect. I'm fine with any comb type, egg or feather color, leg color....but I don't want a frizzle who is freezing in winter because her feathers don't hold heat in, or a muddy white silkie who's miserable in the Oregon rain.
So all my hens have clean legs, no crests, and normal feathers.
I agree. I'm more into function than looks. Say if you spend $20 on an Australorp she'll lay you a fair amount of eggs and you'd be getting your money back. But if you spent $20 on a silkie you'd spend even more money feeding her while you're trying to break her broodiness. It just makes sense if you ask me.

Yeah. I agree.
A small crest is just fine, like a CCLB. Or a few foot feathers, like a marans. But beyond that is a no.

As a breeder I don't really mind the number of eggs layd and the age they start, I set my choices on aesthetics of the breed and their temperament.
Out of these two, I wouldn't really know. I have an Australorp and she's the older hen in the flock, I like her a lot and she's very sweet but Australorps aren't a very colorful breed (like, there are only blacks, blues, splashes and whites). Silkies are very friendly and docile, and they come in a lot of colors, but to be sure on the sex you have to wait until they are adult or so.
So... I'd choose Brahmas:p:lol:

Black sumatras are a good one to breed because they are expensive the thing is IV only seen one person selling them before and I don't even think they were the real thing. But they would be worth breeding possibly, made a thread on here once asking about them apparently a few people on here breed them.

Malays are one of my favourite looking chickens aswell. Sooner or later I'll get a few of those too.

What breeds are you breeding at the moment? I just had some chicks hatch today, or noticed them, they are mix breed, leghorns cross Barnevelder cross new Hampshire, three breeds in one.. they hatched via broody chooks. There is also a black chick in there too so it may be part australorp too. Yes the idea of australorps all looking somewhat similar as opposed to the more unique silkies is a score for silkies imo. But Australorps are dual birds and more farmish. There's been a lot of good points so far on the thread from folks, thanks.

I can't remember when my SLW started.. wasn't really keeping count. We had shavers and they were blazing on as they do, so we weren't want for eggs.
Yeah, not sure I was really aware of how LONG it would take to get eggs from non-hatchery birds! I have 3 that are 8 months old (2 silkies and the GLW) and 2 that are 6.5 months (English Orps)…and 12 that are 5 months (Ameraucanas, Cochins, and a Marans) and only one Silkie that is paying rent! 😆 So I’m on board with silkies so far haha, they are now my favorite chickens!
