If you could breed pure breeds

Yeah, not sure I was really aware of how LONG it would take to get eggs from non-hatchery birds! I have 3 that are 8 months old (2 silkies and the GLW) and 2 that are 6.5 months (English Orps)…and 12 that are 5 months (Ameraucanas, Cochins, and a Marans) and only one Silkie that is paying rent! 😆 So I’m on board with silkies so far haha, they are now my favorite chickens!
My Silkie was my slowest to start, but her sisters were shavers. I've heard some late season hatches can wait till next spring to start, but I've never seen it myself.

My SLW has bulk on all my other girls though. She is one heavy bird with perfect lacing since her daddy was a show bird. I have two orpingtons in the brooder though, also show lines, so they might win out by next year. Especially since nice we're buying rural and can now keep our roos XD.

What breeds are you breeding at the moment? I just had some chicks hatch today, or noticed them, they are mix breed, leghorns cross Barnevelder cross new Hampshire, three breeds in one.. they hatched via broody chooks. There is also a black chick in there too so it may be part australorp too. Yes the idea of australorps all looking somewhat similar as opposed to the more unique silkies is a score for silkies imo. But Australorps are dual birds and more farmish. There's been a lot of good points so far on the thread from folks, thanks.
At the moment I'm only breeding Brahmas, Bantam Cochins and Japanese quails. I have only one Australorp which I'm not breeding, she's the mascotte of the flock. I also have few pairs of button quails, which I adore, but I'll keep them only as pets and I won't hatch buttons anymore I think.
I'd love to have more breeds but I prefer to focus on less breeds and have better results.

Yeah cool, I use to have button quails years back, they use to breed a bit, Made a thread on here about my button quails here is the link. I like Cochins too but never had them, button quails are a bit hard to breed cus they fight a lot and you have to separate them often.

I can't even SEE her face...🤭

Beat me to it :gig :highfive:

Count me in the Australorp group if only given the choice of those two. Much as I love silkied feathers, I just can't do Silkies, or anything with a big crest that blocks out their face like that.

But if given a choice of any breed, my Dorkings would win, hands down. Talk about the sweetest, most docile chickens you'll ever meet. :love You don't need a Silkie to get a personality like that.

I am really liking these Brown Leghorns I got last spring, my white ones are ok too

Yeah, my GLW is also my heaviest girl, she's quite a beautiful chicken. Soft, perfect feathers on a bowling ball shaped body haha. I have a feeling I may be one of those that has a chicken that "waits" till spring :( Oh well! I love them all anyway! :)

Yay for keeping your roos! I have kept a couple of mine and there were lots of tears for the ones we had to rehome. Someday I will have a bigger property and will keep all the roos!
