If you could raise one breed exclusively, what would it be?

We just started with chickens this year and are all already in love! We've got a multiple-breed flock of layers, and I like each breed for a different reason. I like our little WL, Rosie, because she is too funny and irritates the life out of our neighbor's dog, who can not get anywhere near her. I love our SLW and GLW because they are beautiful. Our BAs are sweet and have the most beautiful green sheen to their feathers. Our RIRs are so social and chatty, and the BOs are so good at organic pest-removal from our garden.

The husband and I are thinking of keeping these girls (they are not for the stew pot, expect, perhaps, for the surprise BO roo, if he gets nasty when he's older), but adding a flock of one breed exclusively for breeding/hatching, selling chicks and eggs (not really to make money, just because it would be fun). Husband wants to get something rare, so we can help others be able to find eggs and chicks. I sort of want to get one of the old standard breeds that is on the endangered list.

So, if you had a choice, which breed would you choose?

I would choose Deleware chickens. They are not very common, and they are becoming endangered. I have 12 RIR pullets and Barred Rocks. Of the Rocks, we have 7 pullets and 3 roos. The Rocks are only 1 week old. I wanted to get Delewares when we ordered chicks last week, but my husband wanted Leghorns. (I got to choose the RIR's and the Rocks, so he got to pick the Leghorns.) I understand that Delewares are the result of crossing a New Hampshire Red hen with a Barred Rock roo. My husband said we can mate our RIR pullets to the Rock roo and hatch our own version of Delewares. So that is my vote for just one breed to raise. (Did you pick up on how sneeky that response is?) You need the 2 other breeds to form the one new breed, so I really don't have to choose just one!

Bantam araucanas. They are incredibly irritating little buggers to breed, but I forgive them.

All of my really "pet" chickens so far have been araucanas. Great personalities, beautiful egg shaped bodies, goofy earrings (tufts), a wide range of colors, and nice blue eggs. Who could ask for anything more?

Dominiques, Dark Cornish, Egyptian Fayoumi, Buff Minorca, Maran, Red Cap, Silkies,

those are the ones Ive always wanted to have a pure flock of.

You can never raise just one.

Haha. I've narrowed mine down to 12 I think....

Light Brahmas, BLRW, White/Splash Silkies, EE's, Black/Mottled/Lemon Blue/Blue/Chocolate/Millefluer Cochins, oh and perhaps throw in some lavenders. Plus all my mutts, and hens of different kinds just for laying.

I usually only count my different colored cochins as one though, because then I don't sound so crazy.

And my mother is now going to start with GLW.

I don't think I could pick just one. hmm Hope you have better luck, and more sense then me.
