Umm, there should have been an option that said, "any breed that I don't already have" lol. At least we could pick more than one.

I had a flying mallard hen that was half silver appleyard, and loved her. I'd really like to try that breed.
Call Ducks - I bought 3 calls, 2 hens and one male, at the state fair this year. They had been constant cage animals and have had some trouble trying to keep up with free ranging on the farm. Never had an egg yet.
The females, about 17 months old, have developed freckles or black spots on their bills. I know that this will ruin their SQ for 4-H and my kid's plan for county fair. The male is w/o freckles.
Do you know anything about this bill coloration and whether it is environmental/hereditary/or something else?

What color are your calls?
I've just gotten into calls (got a White Crested trio through an auction) and this is what I've heard about the black on the bills for whites: not allowed on the drake at all. On an older hen, it's kind of expected. They'd prefer that it not be there, but there is apparently some question about the fertility of a white call hen that doesn't have black on the bill, so I guess it's something the breed is sorta stuck with for now. Like I said, I'm a call newbie, so I may have gotten the wrong end of the stick, I don't know!

Calls aren't known for being prodigious egg layers, particularly during the cool months. Going from a cage to free-ranging is a pretty major change in lifestyle, I'd expect the stress could throw even a dedicated layer for a while. If your girls still aren't producing anything in the Spring, you might need to make some changes in feeding or living arrangements.

I've just seen the Silver Appleyard variety of Call duck.

My call ducks are white, bantam sized, not crested heads. The 3 of them are living with the 14 flying mallards, seem happy enough but cannot keep up and never try to fly. The male is young and I am hopeful will be the breeding male in the spring so the kid has some eggs for a 4-H bird or two. They are so tiny next to the full sized mallards. But the females fight off the big drakes at the food bowl with great success. I assumed cage living was worse for them than our free ranging set up. But they walk so poorly that I may have been wrong. It's good to know that the black speckles on the beak is somewhat expected. Another question: should I try to hatch eggs in the incubator or leave them with the hens? (if I ever get any)
