If you have enough chicks do you need a heat lamp?

My chicks all grow up in my coop. I've had similar experiences with young chicks running around much of or all day without going under mama for warmth -- but the thing is, they do have that option. When a broody raised chicks in cold weather, well below freezing at night and 40-50 days, they chicks still ran around outdoors part of the time, but frequently went under mama for a warmup. And at 2-3 weeks the chicks without a broody (last month) were avoiding the heat lamp even at night, just sleeping in a huddle in a warm undrafty corner.

They do need the option to go somewhere to get warm, though. for the first few weeks. If they get too cold they will pile one on top of the other and smother the bottom ones. I've seen this happen.

the lamp for me is a security blanket in case the heat drops and it gets cold...i mean, it's MINNESOTA for crying out loud, we're not known for the tropical weather! hehehe. Anyways, that's a game of russian roulette I wouldn't want, i'd just go ahead and use the lamp if it was me.

If chicks do not have a mother hen, they will need a heat lamp.
The only reason they can ship chicks without a lamp is because there are so many of them crowded and squished together that they generate enough heat to keep themselves alive.

I don't believe so. How close are you to Cameron, TX? That's where Ideal Hatchery is. They are a BYC sponsor. They will let you pick chicks up at the hatchery OR....

At this time of year you could order online or by phone (better), ask that NO MALES (aka packing peanuts) be included for warmth and expect them to arrive happy and healthy.

Ideal has a min. dollar amount, not a min. chick amount. I believe it is $25
