Sure , they would climb the wood, jump on the plastic and swing in.

At work we watched a mouse jumping from the microwave up against a cabinet door until it popped open. Answering the question of who was leaving the door open so the mice could eat the crackers.

think outside the box....feeder would be offset from "the wood"
 
I've seem mice jump three feet out of a steel 55 gallon drum.

Those things are $50 plus shipping and hold eight pounds. A treadle feeder that holds over 30 pounds costs $85.00 and it would actually stop the mice, rats, and wild birds.

It is amazing that they can sell that product when people can make their own for less than the cost to ship the item.

So, if you are going to go with junk, make it cheaper junk. LOL And the homemade ones will work until the wild birds and rodents show up.
