I Live In A Town Where Chickens Are Legal But Only If You Have An Acre Of Land Or More.i Dont Have That Much I Have A 1/4 Acre Which I Think Is More Than Enough.but According To Town Rules I Cant Which I Think Is Ridiculous. So What Im Wondering Is There Any One Out There That Has The Same Issue?if So Do U Keep Chickens Anyway?because Im Pretty Sure Im Going To Get Them Because I Think The Rule Is Ridiculous,i Have Plenty Of Room ,and Seriously How Much "disturbance" Can Chickens Bring.the Way My House Is Set I Can Keep The Coop And Run Pretty Well Hidden.

If the neighbors are okay with you having chickens, you will probably be able to keep some despite the law. Just don't get any roosters, and keep the coop as hidden as possible.

DO whatever you like, just remember that you are held responsible, make sure its worth the hassle if anything ever happens because of it. Like said before, if your neighbor's are cool with it, they won't bother to complain then you should be ok.

OR/AND you can go to the town and push to change the law to include anyone. Some laws are older, like the town I live right outside of, where you have to have an acre or more as well. But they are trying to change that so it doesn't matter. On the positive side, if you HAVE an acre here there is NO limit to how many you can have, and you can have roosters.

I have LOTS of chickens, on much less land, and I'm illegal. If you're on good terms with your neighbors, then give it a try. Just remember to share eggs with them. It helps if you have someone in the area who is legal who would be willing to take them for you if it does become an issue.

As for prison? That sounds like a police department that must really have nothing better to do. Most municipalities may fine you and order you to remove your birds, but that's about it.

If you think there's a chance of changing your local laws, then I suggest doing that before you get chickens. You know once you get involved in that battle they'll come looking for your birds.

Good luck!

If chickens are outlawed, only outlaws would have them. I'd be looking for a new place to live if you really want to keep them. I wonder what our founding fathers would have thought if they were told they couldn't have chickens? Will

As I already posted in the other thread where you mentioned getting chickens illegally - tread carefully. Depending on your area they may take the chickens, take you into custody, fine you, etc when you're caught (I say when, because it's almost a certainty you'll be caught eventually).

I assume you know what the punishments are where you live. It's up to you to decide whether that punishment is worth raising chickens. Before you go order chicks I'd do as much as possible to change the laws, though... only after you've tried to approach this legally would I condone illegal activity. At least then you've got a leg to stand on when they come to take your chickens - if you never tried changing the laws, the public will look at you much more harshly than if you tried and were turned down by an unfeeling zoning board!

Another vote from the "don't do it" dept.

Your current neighbors will not always be your neighbors. And you never know which of them are the 'stab you in the back' type. Try to get the regulations changed first.
