Illinois...

BTW- Does anyone know about cherry bushes from seed? We have some tiny cherry plants growing around the main bush. They were likely planted by the kids during a cherry pit spitting contest. I'm thinking of moving some into the back to provide chicken cover..... and maybe snacks. (The bushes are sort of dense even after the leaves fall.) Any tips to help them get started? Will they be the same as the parent? (It's not grafted, but probably a hybrid.)
I tried planting a bunch from seed 2 years ago. I placed them in a designated spot , so they would not be disturbed. Buried well over 50 seeds. NONE SPROUTED YET. :idunno They were the DELICIOUS Bing Cherries from the store.
I did have some sour cherries growing in the back yard that must have come from seeds. Original tree is gone 20 years, but there was a smaller one that grew. It died this last winter. It was not very big, but did produce pretty fruit, (sour) and I like the blooms in the spring. I think I may have some saplings that came up this year not far from that tree. The leaves do look like the cherry tree. (close,,,, I'm not completely sure)
The sprouts may have come up from the root:idunno. I know plum trees and blackberries by me do that.

If you will transplant your lil cherry trees, I suggest get some tomato cages, to protect the plants until they get bigger. You can also fashion a cage from some hardware cloth if you have extra lying around. Rabbits tend to eat the bark off sweet woods. They wont eat pine trees. :caf

Here's a pic of the gas comparably trying to kill my other cherry bush. They ripped up the new sidewalk (It was just put in around Memorial Day when they put my big cherry tree into shock.)

Here are all the little cherry tree sprouts. Due to the irreg distance & irreg pattern, I think it's from the kids spitting pits. (There are even a few across the street & behind where I was standing to take the pic.)
@cavemanrich If you want to take a few, help yourself.

Well, I'm finding out that the plants aren't the only things that's late this year.

A praying mantis egg case hatched today - several ended up in my screened room.

...And just look where I found them!

Decided to take a few baby chick pictures today since it is so hot outside to do hardly anything.

I am particularly liking the color of these lavs. These weren't the ones i order and Faraday hatched for me, but came from mine. Ive got a really nice colored roo right now, but hes just so small. Hes not big and fluffy. Yes, thats my ring on the floor. They were obsessed with it until I took it off.....

Now what color do you guys think this one is? Its huge in comparison to its hatch mates. Could have come from an ebony egg, she's my biggest hen. Does it look black or very dark blue to you guys?

I think this chick is a black. Probably black/lav split. Their chick fuzz can look a little lighter than chicks w/o the lav gene. As adults you can't tell the diff.

Sometimes my darkest blues look like a light black, but when feathers grow the color fades to dark gray.

Here's a blue I have now:

The head looks black but the wings are growing in gray. (The lavs & blacks would be more uniform in color.)

Here are the last 2 orp chicks with Xansie (hatched 6-6):

I know the white is a female. I had guessed the laced was male, but I still don't see a pink comb & wattles. The only signs are it "feels" solid like a male and the slower feather growth when compared to "his" sister. I've has some females with slower feather growth, so I can't really judge.

Anyone else have an idea on how to tell gender?
