Illinois...

@homeschoolin momma 's son tried something "different" in hopes of finding an easy way to remove snow from their long, long driveway. Not much success with his fire idea and by the time he finished trying it out, he was too cold to actually remove much snow. LOL I'm sure you know who ended up clearing all the snow.
In case inquiring minds want to know, he tried a propane torch and wasp spray. Didnt work of course.

Does anyone here live near the northwest suburbs of Illinois? I really need a pal to talk chickens with, and my husband doesn't really engage.
I am just getting our first chicks in two weeks! We live in Elgin. Where are you located? I think I'm slightly obsessed. :) This is the fufillment of a childhood dream. I'd love to talk!

Are they coming via USPS, or are you getting from Farm supply store. Blaine's is right there in your hood. 6 chick minimum I'm pretty sure is still store policy, but not sure. :idunno
Do you have housing already set up, and running?

I hear you.
My coops have dirt floors, last year they flooded around the edges. Center has a ft of packed deep litter..
My run is in lowest part of the yard. I walked through knee deep poop soup to lock all the birds in the dry elevated coop.

It's funny contrast to when I was new to it all. I used to avoid the droppings at all cost and throw away "dirty" eggs. Now if I find an egg with debris I just wipe off with fingers (so DW doesn't see the "dirt") and move on with life.

I am actually buying them thru a local farm store, Trellis Farm and Garden in Saint Charles. I was able to order only 1-2 of each breed. We are limited here to small numbers, so I'm ordering 5, but already thinking about getting one more... I have plans to make the coop big enough for at least 6 :)
