I was so excited the feed store near me had silkie chicks but I didn't end up getting any because they looked unhealthy. All of them had pasty butt! Something just seemed off about them so I didn't get them.

Good for you. I'm sure you could do without the heartbreak. I've noticed that some places take very good care of their chicks & others just put out a lamp, feed, & water in hopes that they all sell quickly. I'm sure the chicks had a stressful journey to get to the store, so a little TLC from the employees goes a long way.

Well it's that time of the year I need to go by some 'white' eggs so the kids can color them, they are on sale everywhere for $0.99 and it's still annoying to purchase them...

I actually was going to get 6 white egg layers last year after Easter just for this single purpose, but that moment passed and was forgotten...

Anyone else with colored egg layers feel the same?

We have three white layers so the youngest boy and I did a color eggs-periment

with the dye and brown/white eggs. We actually liked how the brown looked after they were done better than the white shelled ones. (The natural brown we drew on with a non toxic paint pen).

Cool eggs! After discussing it here, I also decided to try dyeing a couple of our green, brown, pink, & cream colored eggs. (No white layers here, but the tiny Sebrights are very pale - almost white) They all came out very bright. Then the kids went to town with the stickers.

I also finished baking 65 Hot Cross Buns for my family & neighbors. The teachers & friends already received theirs, so I am now done - & exhausted.

Nice job on the hot cross buns @Faraday40 , they look delicious! Such a nice tradition for the kids. I also saw all the easter egg coloring posts, I too, went out and bought a dozen white eggs for the grandkids to color. But with all the great posts about the brown eggs, next year I will use my own.

A belated HAPPY EASTER!

We had a good day with good food & family. The kids even let me take some pics of them dressed up. DS chose to pose with a Spitzhauben & DD chose the tiny Bielefelder. (Only biele that hatched) For anyone who likes taking pics. The background is simply a black fleece blanket. Bed sheets work well for a larger background with more than one subject.

Please keep us in your prayers during these next few weeks. Personally, I've been having my own ups & downs. (Almost a year ago, my mom suddenly died w/o warning.) Although it's been a while, at times it feels just too strong. I can enjoy the happy moments in life & try to focus on those, but the tears still pop out. I was very close to my mom & miss her more than I can express. Spring was her favorite season. I would always email pics of a pretty flower, interesting birds, the grandkids, the chickens, or even just our backyard progress. She loved it all.

Yes, DS is a ham. I think it's a boy thing.

DD is the responsible one. She's too grown up to act silly.

I am sorry that I didn't take pictures of OUR colored eggs. I have 5 EE hens and 2 SLW hens, blue, olive and brown eggs and they take color differently than white eggs. The colors are so much richer. We had a lovely lavender egg from one of my bluer EE hen's egg.
I hoarded 7 dozen eggs in the fridge JUST for Easter, so the funky boiled ones and the ones that cracked had to be eaten, too. I had forgotten how good they taste. Kinda gave up eggs for Lent.

Praying for you and yours as always. Its been a long several days here with the hatch not going quite as planned big sticky gross chicks have been finishing out our hatch. Still have two more that are absorbing veins before their big assist. Lost one this AM that had fluid in its lungs and all of the MPC eggs but one did not hatch a couple looked like they may have quit on day 17-18
