Illinois...

My 4.5 wk old chicks spent their 1st day in the grass. I use an old baby play yard with a sheet of styrofoam tied over it. At early eve, I moved them back into their rabbit cage inside the coop. For the next few weeks, I'll be carrying them back & forth. Once I decide to integrate them, it gets quite silly. The chicks eventually use my chicken tractor and get into the habit of going back & forth. But, when I 1st stop carrying them, I must herd them across the yard. It's only 200-400' , but DD & I must hold long poles in each hand - like brooms & shovels - to kind of sweep them along. Then one decides to turn around & they all run back like lemmings to their starting point. Those funny scenes last for about a week & afterwards we only have to open the doors & tell them where to run. They run together as a group to put themselves into the tractor or back into the coop. At some point when they get to be about adult size & I simply stop closing the doors. They run to their destination & spend most of their time there, but they have the option to venture outside & free range and return for safety when needed.

So this is what I will be doing over the next few months as new chicks are added.

Taking advantage of the warm weather today to let the chicks explore their coop and get some fresh air after spending three weeks holed up in the brooder in our garage. I'll be bringing them back inside in an hour or two when the temperature starts going down but for now they're just having so much fun. One of the chicks found a leaf and it was suddenly time to chase each other for it. Then they all just kind of flopped over in the grass with their legs and wings spread out.

Can't wait for this kind of weather EVERYDAY!

Ok, things are getting out of hand over here. I now have 3 broodies, all cochin bantams. I was stealing eggs, then trying to divide up remaining eggs. I am going to have to move them since they have taken over the 3 favorite nesting spots. Ok, all chicks are outside in the garage. Decided to put the youngest in a pen by themselves. I had the large garage door open today, and they enjoyed sun bathing. I have chicks available, 2 pairs of SL cochin Bantams, and 2 pairs or trio of solid and mottled cochin bantams. Also have white Orp cockerel, easter egger pullet and will also have some Spangled Orp available in the next couple of weeks. I should also have mixed cochin bantams hatching from these broodies in a couple of weeks. They will be SL x Mottled blue and black.

My poor black orp hurt her leg somehow today, and when I went to pick her up she headed under the deck. Later on I found her being pecked by a bunch of the girls. She is inside recovering, but they ripped her comb and bloodied the top of her head. Poor thing.

Don't laugh at my coffee cans, they are supporting the hard ware cloth and heating pads, when the 2 larger chickens get up there, it sags.

Spangled Orps and a couple of my orp and bantam cochins.

Enjoying the warm sun for the first time.

I took my littles out again yesterday also... The bigs hens had hackle raised at first

but they settled down.. Although they did thunk the littles on the head through the wire once or twice... getting that pecking order established LOL... roo was better behaved.

My poor girl Sophia, gave her some shelf liner to help her work her leg. After all she went through yesterday, she still gave me an egg this morning.

Looking for something large fowl in Millie Fleur like Leghorn or Swedish Flower or Icelandic . A spare rooster would work fine . Genetic project .

OK trying something new for the runs this year. Have heard a lot of people the use stone for their runs. It keeps the odor and flies at a minimum. Did the small coop first. So far I like it but has only been 3 days. Poop dry quickly and the stones act as a filter. And I didn't forget their bathing area

How do you remove the poop from the stones? or Is it sand?
