Illinois...

LOL yep
And I guess they will have more meat than quail
Well, when we hatch orps we can sell the females & eat the males. It's really not bad getting either sex. Even as young as 6 weeks, an orp has more meat than a quail.
Eating a serama, though???? They're very boney, so I doubt it's worth the effort.

I've heard many people keep them as house pets. Perhaps some one will want these adorable guys. They are rather charming & the way they fly up to our hand when called is kind of cool. DD talked me into keeping the silkied serama roo because he's simply awesome. I don't want 2 more roosters, though.

apparently they do in mayalsa
" Many Malaysians eat serama, believing them an aphrodisiac that also fights asthma."

I put' Dinner' in a coop with 2 hens and 4 pol pullets about a week ago @Faraday40
He still eats first and chases them off until he is done :he He is not very gentlemanly courting either. He does alarm well when the hawks or coyotes come by.
:lau I figured he would have grown out of that by now. At least you know he's mating, though. Mr Wonderful was too much of a gentleman. None of his hens were fertile until he was 11 months old! Poor Mr Wonderful doesn't look so wonderful at the moment. He's molting hard & has only pins on his neck.

Is Dinner still sweet to people? (at least not skittish or aggressive) I have no use for roosters who run away from me or try to test dominance. If you have a good pic, I'd love to see how Dinner's coloration turned out. (He was supposed to a Laced Isabel Orp.) Now is probably the best time to take his photo - before winter & possible frostbite.

still a sweetheart and I still can pick him up. A big ball of feathers.. but he is putting on weight. His daughters look good, but his sons seem small. I'll get some pics of them too..if they cooperate
I was going to get a pic tonight but too cloudy.. I'll get a pic tomorrow ..

We have 3 very sweet cockerels right now. (about 3- 3.5 months old) One is going to @chickendreams24 since she lost her lav orp roo. The other two are Mr Wonderful's sons: a silver laced orp (SLO) and a blue SLO. The SLO is over-the-top friendly. We nicknamed him "Puppy" since he's always underfoot. He's so curious and wants to help with everything. LOL Neither SLO has the best lacing, so they may end up in the freezer. It's b/c of their sweet temperament that they're still here. I may let Puppy grow out a little more to see how his lacing turns out. If it improves, he may be a back up for Mr Wonderful. Of course if any turn aggressive it would make my decision easy.

I hope he soon learns how to respect his girls. Too bad you can't borrow our Chizzy - a Speckled Sussex who can put any rooster back down in his place. She takes care of the discipline here. If a roo is nice, she'll allow him to think he's in charge. If she dislikes a male..... Look Out!
