Illinois...

Princess started laying again!!! I found my 1st pinkish-peach egg today!
(If you remember, she had a bad molt.) Most of the girls are taking time off, so I'm just very excited to have another layer starting up.

Here she was during the molt. (taken around Oct 4)

Here she was last week.

OK, so Princess Lay-a is not a supermodel, but her eggs are very pretty & plentiful.

Did you find a home for all your barred rocks? or is that why you are laughing? LOL. Have you tried posting on FB like the poultry pages, or Illinois Backyard chickens. I had 7 roos I needed to rehome and a guy from Indiana took them all. I had posted them on Poultry Pages. Good Luck! I have a Splash Orp, an Isbar and a Mottle cochin bantam roos I will be rehoming in early spring. I also ordered a couple of SL chicks from Papa Poultry and he sent some extra chicks for warmth of which I am sure I will have some more roos to find homes for.

My barred rocks arnt all Roos just some.. A member is wanting some of my barred rocks but I'm always open to taking in rehomes specially pretty ones like the ones I mentioned if you have Roos that need rehomed please pm me... If your in Illinois you might have to deliver or meet me some of the way I live near the border but not in Illinois I'm in Indiana I take rehomes all the time

She looks happier since her molt is done and she does lay pretty eggs. I am waiting for my girls to start laying again. Although my leghorn is still laying and one of the new orps began to lay. I haven't gotten an egg from my marans for at least a month! Broody Mama hasn't gone back to laying yet and Freida is at about the same stage as Princess Laya but hasn't gone back to laying, so there is hope for me yet. Getting 1 or 2 eggs daily is sad when you have 12 hens.

Will definitely contact you in the March.

It's de-worming time on my farm!
I figured since everyone is so stingy and not laying anyway, it's a good time to clear out any left-over parasites.
I'll keep my fingers crossed for more eggs soon, I'm looking forward to some good color coming from my Arkansas Blue pullets.

Another snowy morning. My chickens stayed inside until this afternoon. By then most of the white stuff around the run had melted. Of course what was left was MUD. I have several hens who like to stand at my feet, looking up, & wait for me to pick them up. Not happening. Nothing like the smell of wet, muddy chicken!

OMG here too! Well, except for the chickens that wanted to be picked up thing. LOL

I was getting mugged for more feed & grains than usual, as they were not interested in foraging and opting for the quick-fix-o-feed.

The eggs were mostly muddy too and of course, I have people waiting to buy them and now they have to wait longer until I get some sell-able ones!

Wow! You have extra eggs to sell? Mine aren't producing much. Three hens & one pullet are laying - and not daily. The rest seem to be taking a long winter break! (I sold 3 pullets who were already laying!!!!) I used a dozen eggs for Thanksgiving & haven't built up a reserve yet. Only getting 1-4 eggs per day from 14 chickens!

I have 30 that are in the "laying zone" but they are definitely slacking off now that the daylight has diminished. Usually I get a dozen a day. But with the mud, I cannot sell the dirty ones. I was considering a "Dirty Dozen" special though! LOL Not sure the state would approve though.

Quote: Why cant you simply wash them. I rinse eggs when soiled with muddy feet. Is it that you do not want to remove the natural protection?? I do refrigerate all that I wash, and they usually do get eaten quickly. I don't have many laying hens ether. Right now none are laying due to molt, age, or attitude of being on strike,
