Illinois...

I have been all over IL so I know where most of you are! I was born at the old hospital in Mattoon (for those of you who knew of it before SBLH), I grew up in Shelbyville most of my life. I lived in Clinton for quite a while. I also lived for short periods in Windsor, Mahomet, Tuscola, Bethalto, Jerseyville, Chicago and am taking up root in Golden. My father lives in Wapella so I go there often. I also have family in Germantown Hills, and Findlay. My husband's family is from Cutler. My daughter's father's family are all from Herrick.. so I got connections all over the place! LOL!

Well, I'm from California, but we've lived in Charleston for 20 years now (so I do know SBLHC, but not what it was before that). Actually, four years ago, we moved out of town to the country between Charleston and Ashmore, and so I got chickens three years ago in July. Now I'm raising my third batch.

I didn't intend to get any more chicks this summer, but a month ago two free-roaming neighbor dogs wandered onto our property and killed half my flock, including my favorite chicken - an adorable, sweet, gorgeous Sicilian Buttercup named Duck (my son's humor). I never even purchased her, she was just an extra "mystery chick" accidentally tossed in with the eight I did order, and it was fun figuring out what breed she was (I'd never even heard of Buttercups before).

We have three white layers so the youngest boy and I did a color eggs-periment

with the dye and brown/white eggs. We actually liked how the brown looked after they were done better than the white shelled ones. (The natural brown we drew on with a non toxic paint pen).

I quite agree! We've actually found that the dark brown eggs (not as dark as Welsummer or Copper Marans) have the deepest, most beautiful colors. Yellow isn't very yellow (more of a yellowish brown, as you might imagine), but the other colors are gorgeous.

Cute Pics @Faraday40 , the kids are getting big. So happy you were able to enjoy the holiday abit.

@chickendreams24 We have found out that our Mysterious white chicks are a result of a recessive gene in the chocolate orps and pop up once in a while. And people are using them to improve their white orp breeding programs, so very worthy of holding on too. The cockerel is yours whenever you want.

I've never heard of white orps... Hmmm it makes sense. I'm still not sure what gender mine is I'll try snap some pics tomorrow and see how they turn out. And maybe get some input from all of you?

Hmm odd that we got two of them from one hatch. So do we know what we could get from them are they homozygous for white if it's recessive I'm guessing they are? But whay about a pattern?

There are white Orpingtons, you can google images. I don't think any pattern will turn up in future breedings, otherwise people wouldn't be using them to help their white orp stock. I will take some pics also, so we can compare. Take a close up side shot of the profile, so we can compare comb and waddles and I will too.

Hello everyone! I'm Ashley and I live up in northern Illinois. We have lots of farms up here with chickens, but I really got interested in backyard chickens when I noticed one of the neighbors for a dog I petsit occasionally had chickens in their backyard. I live in Mchenry county and thanks to a group of great people on this site, unincorporated Mchenry county can have up to six hens on property zoned residential. So now here I am with my barred rock chicks and I'm excited to help them grow into lovely little egg-laying ladies.

Nice to meet you all!

Welcome. So glad you are able to keep chickens. I have 1 barred rock. She is from my original 4, from when I started. She is 3 yrs old this year. Her name is Freida, that summer she took over the dogs bed on the porch.
