Guess you should have one more day left. Did you candle any of the eggs?

No. I didn't. I am a horrible person. I will probably will tomorrow. There were a few nights that got cold here though. The hen that is sitting is such a sweetie. She never pecks at me and loves when I bring her food and water.

Nothing horrible about not candling, it's more for human curiosity... If you want a second eye on the candling let me know and I will try to make some time to swing by...

On the cooler night thing, if she wasn't sitting all that well it might have slowed them down for a day or two, never an exact science...

One thing I do on day 21 if there is no visible signs of pipping is to hold it next to my ear and tap the air cell end a few times with a finger nail, if they have internally pipped they will almost always answer back to the nail taps with a chirp...

I didn't candle because I didn't want to be exceptionally disappointed. (That was more for myself though! LOL)

I did note that the things were not as warm as they should be. But I made sure she had some nourishment and water at least twice a day. But she could get up any time else she wanted.

Today when I came home from the salt mine I was PLEASANTLY SURPRISED.... My 10 year old Easter Egger Delilah laid an egg. She is the one that in July of 2015 was attacked by a neighbors dog. She is blind since then also. Her last egg was just before the dog attack. Nothing until today. You can say that this egg is worth $16...... The amount of Alflock she consumed during her recovery time.

I know I really did not break any records.. But considering she's convalescent as well as Golden years retired, I think it's pretty good. Broilers go for 8 weeks.. Battery hens are allowed + or - 3 to 4 years. And my Delilah

10 and still going.

Hers is the 1st blue on left. Brown from my RIR. (2 years old) 3rd is from my Japanese Bantam. (lays once in a while. Think about 7 or 8 years old) Last is from one of my 4 OEGH Banties.

Pixie i hardly ever candle the eggs when my hens are sitting. Nothing horrible about it. I know that when i let the hens do the work it all turns out well anyway.I have had hens incubate eggs over winter with near 0 degree weather. They can make it happen. Let us know how it goes.

When my hen is sitting on eggs I only candle once around Day 7-10 so that I can toss out any eggs that are not growing. This way the hen doesn't have to sit needlessly in case all eggs are bad.
