How is the Red Tail doing???      and    How is the found/lost pigeon doing ???

Red Tail is someone else,can't say who off the top of my head...

As for the pigeon, it's doing as well as could be expected...

It's all that fond of being in a 'cage' but from everything I have read, getting them to imprint on a new home is for all intents a slim chance... So with that I have the strong feeling that if I every let if fly again it would get lost, eaten or some other ill fate, so it's going to be a caged bird... And honestly as far as 'house' birds go, it's not as bad as I would have expected, I grew up with a lot of birds in the house, we actually had the 3rd bedroom in my childhood house converted to an aviary for several years, this single pigeon is a cake walk

My eldest daughter still takes it out of the cage every so often and sits on the couch watching TV holding it, and thus far she has been a devoted care taker giving it food and water every day without any assistance so I'm proud of that outcome...

And every time you go near the cage it jumps off the perch and down the bottom of the cage expecting you to open the door, so it's still personable...

The only negative and it's not even really a negative is that it 'coos' for a few hours every night when the kids go to bed and the house goes quite...

I still want to build an outdoor place for it but just so much to do, and I know everyone keeps telling me it's too early but my mind is already starting to focus on getting set for winter... As soon as I do get around to an outdoor cage, I will start my search to get it some friends...

Walked outside just now to the coop and back and on the way back found one of our slw cockerals dead in the yard with no apparent cause. He was not stiff and had no injuries that I could see, other than being a little thin. Of course it had to be probably the nicest one of the four we are growing out. Ugh. Darn.

Came out carrying an egg from our legbar and saw that, boy did it rain on my parade.

Only two things I can think are I had just thrown them a bunch of large tomatoes did he choke on a bite, possibly get in a scuffle over one that I didn't see or hear and have his neck broken??? I'm thinking maybe he choked because he was happily eating with the rest of the flock when I walked away to go into the cooler coop.

Is this possible? What's the likelihood that he would just drop dead of no reason?

There is a such thing a 'sudden death syndrome' in chickens and other fowl, and it's more common then many suspect especially in broiler breeds, but it effects other breeds as well...

Pretty easy to identify if you observe it, and likely a good candidate if the bird was found on it's back as it's also called 'flip-over disease' because they literally flip over on their backs and die...

I had witnessed one of my peafowl die this way right in front of me, I was out in the coop and she acting perfectly fine, then all the sudden she flipped over to her back, wings flapping and was dead in about 10 seconds flat, so I immediately did some research can came across the syndrome when trying to figure out what had just happened...

If it was lost and could not find its way home it will imprint on a new home . It needs a family to help it feel like it is home .Alone and free flying it will find a flock to join .

I'm letting my birds sleep in & didn't bother letting them out of the run until after the worst of the storm hits. Of course I can't make my human children sleep in. DH walked DS to the bus stop & it had just started to rain. About 2min after leaving the house, WHOOOSH! Heavy downpour! It was perfectly timed so that the moment they got to the bus stop, the deluge began. DH looked like a drowned rat holding a broken umbrella as he walked through the front door. Just then, it went back to a normal steady rain. I couldn't help but laugh!

I like the variety of your flock. Your SLWs are so round & pretty. What are the blues? Are they cochins?

I will likely be slipping some chickens into your flock. I had someone asking about more lav orps & at the same time, we had 2 broody hens. She wanted 5 & another lady wanted 2. Now that 10 chicks are here, I haven't heard back from either. I'm going put the chicks on Craigslist and see what happens, but honestly, I want the number down & I really don't know if there's much demand for chicks this time of year. If I still have them in Oct, perhaps we can meet up north again. Shhhhh... Your DH2B doesn't have to know. LOL

Hmm well he wasn't on his back when I found him more in his side so idk if it's still a possibility of course that doesn't mean he didn't get bumped or moved by another bird.

Crazy weather here today so far. Started before 6 am this morning woke us up. I ran out and shut the main door to the cooler coop(screen door-chicken wire-doesn't keep out rain) Of course I had blankets out on the line that weren't quite dry last night not knowing anything about the coming rain I left them there in the nice breeze. You can imagine the state they're in. Ran around and checked on everyone all seemed fine. Although our tarp on top of the cooler coop did not survive the storm. We need to reshingle it or reroof it idk. The idiot who took the roof off left all the nails in it or all over the ground the chickens still scratch a few up here and there ugh.

Standing water everywhere almost flooded over the stoop and into the cooler coop. The run in the out building stayed dry.

Was that meant to be at me? Lol Yep. If you suddenly find more chicks in your coop than were there the day before, then you'll know the chick fairy paid you a visit. LOL (Seriously I wouldn't actually drop & run.) My poor hubby has no idea what the current chicken count is. He doesn't do any of the chicken chores & is happier that way. As long as the number goes back down to normal before snow, the chickens stay happy too.

Sorry about the standing flood water & extra laundry. Nothing like a big storm to add more chores to the list. I let my chickens out around 8:45am but it soon rained again. My birds were enjoying a big worm hunt & didn't seem to mind the rain. Even the broodies & chicks were out. (The chicken tractor is 1/2 covered, so I expected them to be huddled together, but they were running about.)

Those are my Silver Laced Orpingtons, I don't have any wyandottes and the blue is my blue Marans, who is molting. I am also in the same boat as you, but with bantam cochins. The last 2 eggs were pipped at lockup, so I will be up to 10 chicks, plus the 4-8 week old juvies. I am nuts!!!! But they are so cute. I have an add on Craiglist for the cockerels and roo, but haven't gotten a bite. I will also be posting the babies when the time comes. Here are a couple pics of my SL Orps, I just love them.

This is the only Silver Lace Orp I kept from my own hatching eggs when I had AL. She is 5 months old and her lacing is beautiful

This is AL's replacement, he is a big boy! He just started crowing and is becoming interested in the girls YaY!!!

Sorry. With 2 posts about the rain this morning I got confused & thought the pic was from ChickenDreams24. I was laughing so much this morning with my poor drenched DH, that I forgot to have coffee.


BTW- how's the gravel in the run area working out?
