Illinois...

x2 on the frozen water. I must also set up my heated water. I've been setting out a standard waterer on the patio each morning & bringing it inside to refill each night. They have the chicken nipple waterer, but prefer the reg drinkers when they have the choice. I leave them out when daytime temps are above freezing. When it's colder, they only get the nipple drinkers.

The caveman is BLESSED with more chickens.

. This afternoon a gentleman arrives in my driveway looking like he wanted information, or directions. Instead he asks me if I would be able to take a couple of chickens off his hands. He got them from someone who was not able to keep them. He himself was also not able to keep them since he does not have a coop. Also lives in Franklin Park, where chicken keeping is a Capital offense. He did not want the chickens to end up

well, you know. He just felt that he needed to rescue them.

He knew from passing my home that I kept chickens. During the day when I am home, I free range them. There is no fence or visual barrier so anyone on the street can see the girls grazing. (I know grazing is not correct term

) I said YES, and did not even ask what type they were. I only wanted an assurance that they were hens. (no roosters allowed) He answered that they indeed were only hens. Left and came back with them 10 minutes later. Of course it was a surprise to see what come to me. One is a Production Red. The other I am not sure of but think it might be a White Rock. The man did not know anything about chicken breeds.

I am just assuming it is a Production Red. I can be Red sex link, or a Barnyard mutt. Looks just slightly lighter color than my RIR which is just a hatchery grade mutt as well.

Assuming this may be a White Rock. Way heavier than above PR. Large, and with Yellow legs. I will see how she looks tomorrow when she is running around. She seemed docile. I have had White leghorns, and she is much bigger then them. Also thought that it might be a White Marans, but reading about them indicates Marans should be smaller than Rocks. I never had ether in the past. When she lays an egg, and who knows when, due to stress of relocation, I will have a better Idea.

Saw the 1st & only pip this morning at 7am.
At 8:30am we noticed 2 more pips &

Right now we have 4 pips & 1 active, peeping, all-yellow chick. I guess I got an A&M quail. Can't wait to see what else pops out.

An update..... Still don't have names for them.

Day' s not over.

The size is large like Faraday's Moose. Maybe I can steal that name.

White skin, and going thru a molt right now. Appetite like 7734. When the wing feathers grow out, it may rival that of the condor.

At the bottom of the pecking order NOW ,

But not for long.......

@Faraday40 Careful with that quail on that plastic I'm not familiar with quail but I would assume they can also get splay or spraddle legged.

Thanks for the heads up. I've been watching. They seem to be popping out & then crawling around on the rubber shelf liner. Of course the 1st hatchling is running - no longer crawling. I have 4 right now. 3 yellow & one standard looking quail. I think maybe she gave me A&M coturnix. I know she had several varieties but since she felt that fertility would be low, she only charged me for eating eggs and recommended that we hatch in spring. (Of course, the sci fair is in January, so DD's experiment had to happen now.) I just can't get over how tiny they are.

Wow, are you sure she is a she, she has some long legs? She is going to be beautiful after her molt and Moose would be a fitting name
