It's 3 or 4 days old, and I am in McHenry. I can meet people as long as itshe not crazy far. We drive to crystal lake, Lake in the hills, or Woodstock a lot. Husband also works out of Dupage Airport, so we can head that way too.

I'm further south in DuPage Co. I know of some avian vets here, but they specialize in exotic animals & mostly treat parrots. A trip there would easily cost about $120 just to walk into an exam room.

Just wondering - Do any of your friends or neighbors have chickens? Learning directly from someone is always the easiest way.

I've learned a lot via BYC & Youtube. Whenever one of my feathered friends has an issue, I go into research mode.

Woke up this morning to 2 peeping lav orps in the incubator. They pipped last night, but the eggs aren't due until Sat. I hope my temps are not running a little high this time. Both chicks came from Snuggle's eggs. One pip in another orp egg. (All from the backyard eggs) The rest have nothing. I actually thought the silkie eggs would be 1st to hatch. When candling, they seemed a little ahead of the others; plus my bantam eggs have always been among the 1st to hatch.

Sadly no. We just moved into the state in August and mostly just know the other pilots my husband works with. I posted on the next door neighbor thing and basically got yelled at. I have looked at videos but they are all of much bigger chicks. I will try it again today. Thank you for the support.

Editing because its much worse now. The other little leg and foot are getting really messed up from trying to support the whole chick with just the one leg. I think we are going to have to call it on the little one and I am heartbroken.

I’m from Newark, IL – small town of about 1,000 not too far outside of Chicago. I have 15 chicks in the brooder now – planning to keep 9 for my backyard and gifting 6 to another great home. This flock is my first and I’m excited for the year ahead – will have my daughter’s show a couple at the Kendall County Fair and Sandwich Fair this year.

My neighbor has chickens and he’s half the reason we got some – my parents are also neighbors and they’re definitely looking forward to the eggs!

Lucky for me - my aunt raises chickens too and she's a wealth of knowledge.

I am incredibly lucky to have a husband who helped with today. These are the other babies. After a difficult start to the day, husband got a replacement chick for me. Then I discovered they had some how emptied their water out with out tipping it... so into the box of exile they went while I cleaned up after them. We have Pepper (bottom, silver laced wyandotte), Licorice (easter egger), Peaches (amberlink, she is the white one), Cinnamon (buff orpington) and the small ones are Oreo and Brownie (D'uccle bantams). Our one big happy family. Pepper and Licorice are super sweet to the littles. They let them tuck in under their wings for naps. All of our pets have food names, something my husband started when we got our first pet together, a chihuahua mix named Cookie. Now we have another mutt named Peanut, two guinea pigs named Marshmallow and Mocha, and a cat named Coconut. The odd one out is a cat I got as a teenager who is named Jack. We love all our animals and always try to do right by them.
