Thats awesome! They and I have a good understanding relationship. When the chicks hatch, the mom/dad bring them out of the box (7 feet off the roof deck) to the roof. While in the box, I make sure she has water (red bowl). She has accepted me enough that she stands up and shows me the eggs.
Last year we fed them dandelion leaves, and scratch mix. The garden supervisor got some sod and we got a small wading pool so the goslings could learn how to tread water. When they grew in their primary feathers (less tan a month old) we goose-hearded them to one of the harbours by big lake Michigan. Again, I was able to build a good trust with them. The dad and mom were from the harbour and when we got close, dad flew right to it. Mom and goslings followed quickly. I have pics and vids, and I'll share some when I can figure it out. I did find a way to co-exist.
Seems to be the trend this broody season. Hope the little one makes it and good luck on the hatch!Day 20 Update:
Went out to give the broody some food and water. Lifted her gently to find one crushed egg. Half of it was without a shell but with membrane intact. Rushed back in to bring a warm wet towel to grab it. It seemed completely dried out but when I opened the towel in the bathroom, it was breathing. Quickly turned my incubator on and took off the membrane where there was no egg shell. I am not sure if it will survive because seemed liked it was just gasping.
Don't know if its because of the first time broody mama not having enough experience to walk around eggs or the egg shell became too dry & brittle. Hoping for better for the remaining 7 eggs.
Had to post my young man up for free tonight. I kept hoping I was wrong and he'd turn out to be a pullet, but looking at him it's pretty clear. I was looking forward to Speckled Sussex in my little flock! :/![]()
Thats Craigslist for you. But you know sometimes they do turnaround. Hope fore the best.Seems to be the trend this broody season. Hope the little one makes it and good luck on the hatch!
I also need to vent, I had 2 people from Craiglist email me about 7 times each today. I had 1 woman who wanted just a hen, I told her I could only sell them in pairs. She offers me $100 for just a hen, because she only had 2 chickens and 1 died last night and doesn't want her other girl to be lonely. So I broke down and told her I would sell her 2 hens for $20 each, in case something happens like this again, the other chicken won't be lonely. She thanks me up and down. So now you know what happened, NO ONE SHOWS UP!!! Such a waste of time. OK rant over
Sorry the chick didn't make it. Hopefully you will have a wonderful surprise later this evening.Thats Craigslist for you. But you know sometimes they do turnaround. Hope fore the best.
P.S. The chick did not survive. It died within an hour or so. Maybe I should have just left it under the broody, who knows it may have survived![]()
No signs of any other pips under her as of this morning. I will check later tonight maybe there are some surprises for me.
The coop looks great!@Faraday40 Okay now I NEED one. I am still really wanting a silkie or two. Husband asks why I cant just love the chickens I have, and I dont get why wanting silkies has to be exclusive of loving my girls I have haha.
Sassy (the little welsummer) some how tore a piece of tape off the side of the cage and was running around squeaking like a mad chick, and all the rest were chasing her. They looked at me like I was pure evil for taking their tape away.
Anyway I have been pretty busy the last week with the In Laws here. We finally got to work on this...
Father In Law was a contractor before he retired, and gave husband good directions, helped with a lot of it. I got to hand them stuff and boss them around, I mean make design decisions haha. I am heading out to get started on some painting today. The big girls I think have felt neglected while their home is underway. Every time I go out to them now Pepper and Peaches fly to the edge of the pen and wait to be picked up. They balance there and stare at me, so I assume its what they want haha. I hope to get them moved this weekend when husband gets home from his trip.
