@ChicagoClucker
Glad your tooth will be better soon. (Also secretly happy you kept some bantam cochins. I really love the way yours look & now I can still enjoy them via your posts.) You know I would have taken some if I had the room. ..... and some turkeys from @Justso 's neighbor too! LOL

:wee
Very egg-cited about the upcoming hatch:
I separated my eggs into their jail cells last night to prepare for hatch day (Sat):
compartment 1- gold laced & silver laced orps
compartment 2 - blk/lav & a lavender orp
compartment 3 - buff Columbian & blue laced orps

This way if a chick hatches when I'm not around, I'll still know kind it is. (That's my goal anyway.) The jails are modified strawberry containers and DH came up with the term.

Here's a ? for all the other hatch-a-holics out there: How do you mark chicks to be able to identify them? I normally use small colored rubber bands. However I always get a few that fall off. The last time I tried food coloring &/or Crayola marker. Besides being messy, the colors rubbed off after a couple days. Not to mention the chicks do not always appreciate being painted. I'm trying to find a simple way to keep them marked for at least 2 weeks. I really dislike the legbands. Getting one on/off a chick is = torture.

This site is a navigation nightmare for me. :old
How do I find my posts?
I've managed to sign myself off three times in the last half hour .
I think .
I'm on a pc so mobile might be different but clicking on Account brings me a menu and one choice on that menu is "Your Content". Clicking on that brings up a list of my posts.

On my PC, I must scroll all the way to the top to find the "watched threads" button. It took me a while to get used to it.

When you are on the top of a page, move down a post or two, look over at the far right near the bottom of your screen, you don't need to go down to the bottom of the page, just look at the lower right corner of your screen. There are two "shadow" arrows, one pointing up and one pointing down. If you click the top one, it will take you to the top of the page...bottom one down to the bottom of the page.

Morning all!

I got the call this morning to pick up the girl duckies! OMG. I am going to die from the cuteness.. I already forgot how cute they are when they are brand new. Everyone made it just fine. All are eating and drinking like champs. Figured out the heatpad in no time. (we went heatpad since its been so hot I figured a lamp was just going to way over heat things) Duckies came with three chicks I ordered to complete the minimums. The original plan was to sell them, but husband said well since the ducks have their own digs now maybe we will keep them. I ordered a dark egg layer (we got a cuckoo marans) and two surprise chicks. One is an EE (chipmunk, with little muffs) and the other is a generic red or buff color... Its got little pink legs so I think it may be an orpington?

Its been pretty quiet, all the chickens have moved to the coop and run. Poppy, Ginger, Olive and Sassy were divided, but Olive has been hanging out with the bigger ones. Sassy is loyal to Poppy and Ginger it seems and stays with them all the time. The crests are looking really good on them now, and Gingers beard is coming in nice.

The turtle had some how managed to get into the neighbors yard. Her husband was gone too, so she called the neighbors on the other side of her. They were able to send over two guys to remove it and put it in the lake that is behind us all. She like me was afraid for her dog, and her 4 year old who was super excited about the turtle, not knowing it could hurt him. It has not been seen again. But we still dont know how it got between the yards, we checked the fence from both sides and didnt see any holes...

Oh and still no eggs. Peaches, Pepper and Licorice are all VERY RED AND PLUMP. Very chatty too. 17 weeks and 2 days old now..

Perhaps yours are early bloomers. It doesn't hurt to be ready. I had one pullet (out of many over the last 5 years) lay at 17 weeks & another at 19 weeks, but it's a lot more common for them to start at 20-25 weeks. (Unless you have the very large heritage breeds like Orps that can take 8-9 months!) They usually start checking out the nesting boxes & spending some quality time in there. Once in a while, you may get a pullet that prefers to lay eggs in other places- like in your potted plants, behind the feeder, or under a tree. LOL

Congrats on the cute ducks. I'm sure you will have a lot of fun with them. Also glad to hear your turtle issue has been resolved for now.

We've been busy with the chicks. It seems to go in cycles. I actually still have 9 lav, 4 black & 10 choc cuckoo orps. Caring for 23 chicks without a broody is a lot.

My other eggs are due to hatch this weekend. The good news is that with the chicks will come 2 fantastic broodies. I am hoping they will adopt some of the older chicks. Trouble has always been good about adopting chicks, but Cookie's a little fussy about it. However, last fall they both were broody at the same time. I divided and had them share the tractor. After about a week, I was able to remove the barrier & they shared all the chick responsibilities.

I live mostly in Southern Illinois with my mom, my sister, 3 dogs, 2 cats, plus 4 kittens, 20 chickens plus 7 chicks, 2 guinea fowl with 6 more keets on the way, 3 ducklings, and 3 poults.
Welcome :welcome
