Good/Bad news:

DD had a bad Fri at the regional sci fair. She thought for sure she bombed, forgot some important parts of her speech, felt horrible, and had an all-out anxiety attack after school. She announced that she will NOT be competing next year.

Well, we got a letter of congratulations this morning stating that she was chosen to go compete at state. Ugh! We signed paperwork months ago promising to attend state if she was chosen. To her this is very BAD news and not an honor. I hope I can change her attitude.

DS has a church retreat the same weekend, so only one parent per kid. At times like this, I guess I'm glad we only have two kids. LOL

Of course you know if the doms are male, you're getting them. The chick fairy knows where you live. LOL Try explaining that one to DH2B.

Tell them to hurry up I'm still working on wearing down DH2B to the turkey idea. I really want to see poults hatched by Faraday40. What breeds do you have again?

One of my favorite hens, Pebbles, turns her nose up at BOSS. LoL

I remember the monster watermelon lol. We had that problem with a pumpkin this last fall.

I have a bronze hen from 2017 and she had her choice of 3 males until Feb 28th when I sent the red Bronze male to freezer camp, a hatchmate. Her saddle was dirty then so he could have bred her. The dominate is a Narragansett( Nari) from 2016
and the one she hangs with, a hatchmate, is a sweetgrass or calico.. different people have different opinions on what color he is lol. r2elk on byc thought calico and he raises sweetgrass. Porter from porters rare turkeys said sweetgrass, and he raises both.

So if the red bronze is the daddy the poults would be: bronze or red bronze

The Nari would produce male bronze and female Nari

If sweet grass: bronze semi-color semi-gray

If Calico:Male Bronze semi-color semi-gray, Male red bronze, female Golden Nari or female Nari semi-color semi-gray

and before you think I am a Turkey genetic master, I use the color calculator at porters http://www.porterturkeys.com/

He has pics of a ton of birds, but not the semi-color semi-gray color

I would like to get 2 or 5 more hens out of my incubator, whatever you don't want and when she goes broody. Supposed to have at least 3 hens per Tom and I kept getting Toms.. out of 7 poults in 2 years I have one hen
and a lot of good eating

She should lay about 80-100 eggs so that's a lot of eggs to incubate

I am in Plainfield, IL. I'm wanting to start keeping chickens this year in our backyard. I'm considering 4 or 5 hens. I would really like to get to know somebody nearby who is keeping chickens in their yard already, and ideally get to visit their coop. If you are near Plainfield, Joliet, Naperville, etc. and willing to help a newby learn a thing or two, I would greatly appreciate it! I hope somebody writes me back soon.

DD lives in Plainfield, and they do not allow chickens where she lives. It may be the subdivision rules..
First check with the Village Zoning Department if it is allowed. They may also inform you of certain rules and regulations regarding number of chickens as well as if roosters are prohibited. The placement of your coop may also be restricted. Where I live, no roosters. There are some peeps that still have them. One call from a neighbor, and Sheriff would arrive and INFORM ,,,,,,,,,,,, Fun Over.

Yeah the chick fairy is pretty great! And I don't even have to lose my teeth LOL dh2D can't complain when the chick fairy makes me so happy and most of them are for eating anyway. It's nice to get a few to keep too. My Christmas presents are doing great! They're so beautiful and sweet they do amazing with the flock too!

Thank you! That's so very kind. Paying it forward is such a wonderful thing! I think I'll be able to convince DH2B because I told him if we didn't like them we could always eat them. Lol he complains about the birds but he is the one that decided to build me a cabinet incubator. I'm sure excited but worried he'll regret it.

We picked up a stack of lumber this last weekend almost as high as the cab of the truck.... Oh the chicken coop possibilities. LOL

If you have any extra eggs I sure would love to have one blown for my egg collection.

I've been looking into Nargansett, blue slate, and sweet grass turkeys also royal palm.

I know DH2B's brother used to raise turkeys for the fair but I think they were just bb bronze.

Growing up my aunt had bb whites one year but they were huge and kind of mean. I've seen wild turkeys my whole life though. My Dad and brothers used to hunt them. I also worked at an aninan shelter that had a wild flock on site that we used to have to walk through doing chores. Very cool but intimidating. The toms never did anything though.

I'm sure you'll hear back soon. We have some great people on the Illinois thread. Welcome to byc and to the world of chickens. I'm from southern WI but hang out here a lot. Pull up a roost as we say and feel free to look around byc. The learning center is a great place to start.

Thank you for the bit of advice. The village allows up to 8 hens. No roosters. I must have a fenced in area minimum of 32 square feet (we will have a much larger area and only 3 or 4 hens). I am not sure about the need for a permit for the hens or for building a coop (I plan to build a coop the size of a dog house just).

I live near New Lenox on about 10 acres and have hoop coops with about 52 chickens and few turkeys... How I do things probably would not work in town, but I will help you if I can

Give it some time and someone near you may respond. There are many Illinois peeps that only read posts. Some of those may come to post things on occasion. Then there are those that come and go with their chicken adventures. Nothing stays permanent.
If you are going to build your coop yourself, consider the size requirement for comfortable chicken keeping at 4 square feet per chicken. Over crowding in too small of a coop causes undesirable situations. Since you are only wishing to keep 3 or 4, a 4foot x 4foot coop should be enough. Easier to do it right the first time, rather than to redo later. For coop ideas check out this thread. There are all different sizes there. Scan thru pix for IDEAS.

I would personally pass on getting permits since you are just doing a small project. What they don't know wont hurt them. It is legal for you to keep said pets anyways.
Here is a pix of my coop. Nothing great but it is a repurposed Lil Tykes Playhouse. (this one is about 10 years in service) It has several levels, so my bantams roost at the very top where the LF cant squeeze into. The next level is for the rest. There is next lower level for nesting area and overflow sleeping. Below that are some branches for the chickens to navigate their way up or down. The floor area is not used as sleeping surface, but I do place feed and water there. (only during time when chickens are locked due to us being away from home for the day) I usually place feed and water outside their coop in run area. If thing go correctly for me, I will be building a new larger coop this summer. 4 x 8 floor plan, walkin 6 to 7 foot in front. Lower towards the back.

And here is my flock of 6 pets,,,,

Their run area is the whole fenced section on side of house. There are items stored there as well. Somewhat predator proof, but not Fort Knox.
