Tge think the chick is momma. And the chick is just as confused as it is happy to have some pals.

Sounds like a really fun backyard. Perhaps I should send some praying mantids over when mine hatch. I could also share some milkweed. We've been growing the caterpillars & releasing Monarchs since 2007.

I'm getting my own chuckles watching little Cookie (bantam) take care of a large number of chicks and 3 poults.

I baked some herb bread & cinnamon rolls for the 3 graduation parties we're attending this weekend. Baking's always been "my thing" but I wanted to give the host family a little something extra. So, I brought a doz eggs as a gift. (Better than wine - IMO) The rain held off, the picnic was great, kids had fun, and we were given some left-overs to bring home for poor DH who's miserable and had to stay home. While at the party, DS's eye was beginning to look a little like pink eye. Lucky for us, the hostess is a pediatrician. She gave us some prescription eye drops so we won't have to wait until Mon to treat or use urgent care for something simple.

I came home and told DH that we traded a doz eggs and some bread for our dinner, a doctor visit, and medication. What a deal! I also gave some eggs to the boy who mowed our lawn. He asked for too little $, so the eggs were a "tip."

For what have you guys traded eggs? I'd love to know.

I traded for a new small dorm size refrigerator.... I didn't need it but the guy owed me for$75 in eggs ... he was trying to sell it...so I figured what the heck...

I don't trade as much as give au eggs. However, my mother-in-law, who has about 20 hens and 2 roos, has traded eggs for all sorts of things with her neighbors and other locals in TN. She has traded several dozen for some laying hens before. She also had traded for waterers and feeders (1 waterer which we now have and use). She is always trading them for something or another.

I also like to give stuff away or make/bake things for people. It makes me feel good to brighten someone's day a little.

When @chickendreams24 & I first met it was to exchange chicks. We kept in touch and became friends. Sometimes during the 1st year, I had too many chicks and needed to rehome them. We agreed to meet somewhere and I gave her the chicks but she also gave me some fresh pork products and home-made freezer jams. What I deal! (Technically just 2 friends exchanging gifts, but I bragged to others about my terrific barter deal trading a box-full of chicks for a freezer of high quality food. LOL But seriously the best brats we ever ate! )

I gave my neighbor some eggs for popping over to mow the front when our tractor went down. (Common occurrence here- happened today, but got it running mostly) Also let him keep all the eggs from when he "chicken" sat while i was in Georgia for my mum's funeral.

We do the same for our pet sitters. They always get paid in eggs.

That black hen looks nice. Is she one of your meatbird projects? How does she do in the heat?

That hen is out of my mix roo and a Blk Jersey Giant . She hatched sept 2016... She does ok in the heat..they have lots of shade
she is the mother to many cx mixes though. Produces nice meaty cockerels and good laying pullets.
