Illinois...

Ok guys, i need thoughts on this. Found one of my older spitz chicks dead in the pasture while doing a well fare check. It was my spitz with the deformed foot.

Ranger was with me early this morning when we were letting them out and feeding them and yes I forgot about him for about 3-4 min. However, the only wound i can find on the bird is right on the joint of the wing. Its mouth was crammed with food. Do chickens choke trying to eat too fast?

Only injury. Dog or just possibility the chickens picking at it? It does not seem like a life threatening injury.

Has anyone ever seen this white cheesy stuff before? My mind keeps thinking its like fly eggs.....:sick

While I'm sad to lose any bird, this one would have been the one i would have not kept due to the foot issue. What is bothering me is how it died. Dog, choking, stress? Although this one did have and interesting cruella de ville hairdo.

First of all :hugs My condolences. it was a nice looking Spitz.

My guess is the white stuff is fly strike. Not sure if that's the actual cause of death but it could have been. Chocking is also a possibility or maybe choking because it got grabbed & squeezed. Animals often empty bowel contents at the moment of death. Maybe it could also work the other way. (I never actually heard of that but if the death position was pressing on the crop or upside down....maybe???) My chickens are drinking like crazy. Although chickens do not vomit, when their crops are so full of water from excessive drinking, it can & will come out when picked up + tilted downward.

If the bird was already weakened from excessive heat and flies, then any little thing could have pushed it over the edge.

Sorry for your loss
Any slobber on the feathers?
Flys lay eggs very quickly, but the eggs hadn't hatched yet so I don't think that killed.
I agree it might have been a combination

There didn't seem to be a huge amount of moisture like slobber on the wing and barely any blood. Thats why i was thinking the chickens were pecking it there.

After looking at pictures of fly eggs and then zooming in on the pictures i posted earlier, they really are fly eggs!! Wow!! Yucko! They laid that much on it in that little amount of time?!?! Now i really do want to :sick I really hate flies. I've got so many traps around the perimeter of the pasture it feels
"re-donk-ulous".
I'm beginning to think this bird choked on its food.

A few pictures of the lavender babies. There are 7, but i could only grab 5.

That last ccl has such a pretty face! Just no crest.
Thanks for the pics.
Were they from June 6th ( 6+ weeks old now) ?

Most look female so far. #5 has a little more comb and may be the only male pictured.... but I certainly hope that poor bird grows some feathers. He's got some sunburn on his little naked butt! I also hope it's not a genetic fault. I've read that lavs can have weak and tattered feathers from the dilution gene and that's why they're always crossed back with blacks or blk/lav splits. If lavs x lavs are bred together for too many consecutive generations you'll get poor feather quality.

I remember that 'Brick' had some bald spots as a chick. Some chick fuzz got rubbed off & he stayed bald on his back until his feathers slowly came in. His was more like a cactus.

Ok @Faraday40 what do you think of this guy now? I posted pics in a different topic colthandorf was posting in. I think they are about as confused as i am. Here's that weird chick....

His chest looks laced. Was that a chipmunk-looking chick at hatch? It could be a gold laced orp with poor lacing. It could also be an orp with one laced parent.... or even a mix.

I got a surprise GLO when Double Stuff (Blizzard's daughter) was bred to Mr Wonderful. She looked awful when young and is slowly improving (Just like Blizzard). I don't expect she'll ever have good lacing. At least now we can see that she's sort of laced. Not sure what I'm going to do with her, but for now, she's a seeing-eye chick and living with the bantams. (Digger developed cataracts & her chick helps her navigate.)
