Some sad news to report. Cookie got bullied, pushed off nest, and lost 3 eggs a few days before hatch (last Sunday& Monday). 2 of the remaining 3 silver laced orp eggs hatched. One chick was found dead (cold/wet in corner of nest) and the other was a cute recessive white orp. Today Cookie left the nest with her only chick. This afternoon, the chick is just gone. Vanished! No peeping, so I'm sure it's been taken by something. My poor Cookie!

I put her back in a nest box and she quickly settled down on the fake eggs. If she continues to sit on the fake eggs in there, then I'll have chicks for her on the 13th. I suppose that's the only good thing about her sad story today.

I fear either my turkeys or my rooster may be the cause. This is the 2nd time I lost a day-old chick this year. They seem to be OK with slightly older chicks, so I'll have to figure out a way to move Cookie. I never had this problem before, and the turkeys and lav rooster are the only new birds this year. Why can't they chase rabbits and squirrels like my chickens used to? This is a very gruesome problem!

So sorry for your losses. I tend to blame the turkeys for issues and sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't. Of course, like you most of the time I don't have a clue what happened

Momma hen brought the babies outside for the first time. I saw her earlier and knew she was thinking about it.

It's tough to remember this is also part experiment to see if she can integrate chicks better than I can.

She will integrate them better than you. They almost always do.....almost.

My riddle for today is which of 5 chickens laid this egg:

Anyone have any guesses?
Looks kind of like a turkey egg. LOL

Your Welsummer doesn't look like she's ready. (but my Welsummer does have lots of speckles - but on a darker egg)

Your Barnevelder or Marans will likely lay dark speckled eggs. Perhaps the hen just had an odd egg since she's starting out.

I have a couple orpingtons that lay speckled eggs. Usually from the same hen.
