Its been a very sad day here at the farm. I woke up and headed out to do the chicken tending and found Faraday40 beautiful Blizzard passed away. I had brought her inside due to the extreme cold and I didn't like the way she was looking. She felt thin and was sleeping in the coop a lot, even during the day. The rooster damage from this summer was really not getting better even though she had pin feathers.

I picked her up and cradled her for a few minutes. She was still warm and had only passed no more than an hour before. After I had put her back, I felt like something was crawling all over my arms and side of face. I grabbed a flashlight and inspected her body. She was ridden with mites. I feel horrible I missed this on this sweet girl! I cancelled going to church and immediately dusted every chicken. I saw no signs of mites on anyone else.

I didn't have a lot of pictures of the sweetheart, but here's what I have. I'm sure Faraday40 will have a lot more.

Trying to be a good surrogate mom to a pair of slo's babies that came with her.

Sorry for your loss, don't beat yourself up. If only our chickens would just speak up and tell us when something is wrong when it's happening things would be so much better.
We've had horrible weather for infestations with it being forties and rainy a few weeks ago, that's when things really take hold.
 
Winter is the time I take advantage of worming my chickens since they're not laying anything anyway. I use Valbazen, and like to rotate my stock of product. Since it's such a huge bottle I have a lot left over. If anyone is interested in a free giveaway let me know. I'll draw off as much as you need. Valbazin is an excellent broad spectrum wormer, You do need to give two doses .5 ml 10 days apart plus there is egg withdrawal. You can look up more info on the forums.
 
DS alerted me to a problem developing in our coop. The wire shelf is getting bent.

This is what happens when 37-40 lbs of chicken decide to roost on the top shelf.

It also looks like I'm getting another broody. Xansie is a good mama, but MaiMai.... Well the first few times she went broody, she tried to hatch the food dish. After that she sat on the egg until it hatched. (Another hen adopted the chick) The last time she sat on eggs AND cared for her 3 chicks.

These silkies remind me of "Tribbles" (Balls of fluff that reproduce like crazy - from Star Trek) Can you see the resemblance?

I've always had very good luck with neighbors as pet sitters. Who else will care for them and accept eggs as payment? (Of course, I doubt there's many eggs right now)

Sometimes I feel like I'm an "Orpington pusher." Go ahead try one....... then they come back the next year to buy more friendly, big, beautiful, round Orpingtons. LOL Yep. I think I'm getting many people in the Chicagoland area addicted to Orpingtons. They're a gateway chicken. Next thing you know, those people are trying Seramas, Easter Eggers, Spitzhaubens, and even other poultry like quail, ducks, and turkeys. I really love to "share" and help others with their chicken math.
