Illinois...

Some of the chickens with big, single blade combs can get frostbite. I used to try applying Vaseline or Bag Balm to prevent it, but found that when it's -10'F there's really not much you can do. If you see white on the tips, it may turn black. Best to leave it alone. (Touching to apply ointments can cause more pain) The black parts should fall off on their own leaving new pink skin below. The rooster may not lose the entire tip, but usually it's more rounded points.

This guy stood outside in the snow because a little sebright decided she wanted to play in the pine tree. She was sheltered and out of the snow. He was standing guard out in the open. He dipped his wattles in the snow when eating, so they got frostbite too.

Here he is again, standing guard over the little trouble-maker.

10 days later, some of the black began to fall off

They did not tip the scale too heavy,,, but doing their BEST:thumbsup

BTW,,, that is a new scale DS got for me.:hugs I needed to keep myself busy during the lock-downs, so I have been baking some. Scale allows me to make better/more accurate measurements.
This coffee cake is one of my mom's recipes.

The yellow is sprayed butter on top of the parchment paper. I then sprinkle the bottom with corn meal. The butter allows the cornmeal to adhere to the paper, rather than all gathering in the center bottom.

Your bread looks amazing! I've also been baking a lot. I use those tiny eggs for an egg wash before baking the bread. (Don't want to waste a real egg. :gig ) I've been trying out new recipes, but I have not tried sourdough yet.

Yesterday's lunch: Tomato tart with caramelized onions and feta on puff pastry and topped with parm

Over the past few months, I made.....
Cinnamon buns

Pretzels (to go with my cheddar ale soup)

Chocolate cake - but I added ganache on top

Between Covid isolation and these cold temps outside, we've had to be creative with ways to combat boredom. I mentioned before that we've been teaching some of the bantams to play piano. Here's Styx playing "Twinkle, Twinkle" She still needs a lot of practice, but she's getting better. (Sorry about the sound quality. DD recorded it on my ancient iphone and for some reason the sound got messed up. I'll make another video when she gets better.)
