Illinois...

Not the size of my thumb. I almost wonder if she got frostbite and was injured but injury just opened? She could have been attacked but again it's a hole the size of my thumb and no other damage. Possible aggression from another hen but they dont show any excessive aggression when I'm watching. I don't think she would do this to herself biting fleas? Possible small bite from tick but the others see blood and keep biting? Makes most sense I think?
No roo in with her?
Frost bite is usually comb, wattle and feet first.
Weird

Should I cover her wound with something?

I would, and also try to somehow get the skin together so it grows/heals up. Try tape, or even home made sutures. If you used disinfected thread in alcohol, then it would not cause any infections.
Don't know what else to suggest?? :idunno

I just remembered this post from long ago. so I copied and paste the significant portion.

My wife said "Yes it is a long gash but it is only deep in one spot. We flushed out the wound with Saline; I then glued the skin back together with a few drops of crazy glue; gave him a coat of polysporn; he flew out of my hands as I was bring him back to the loft. He was good to go in about 5 days.

Here is the whole post if you would like to view it. It is a pigeon injury. Just realized the super glue can be used to close up an injury. :thumbsup

If you decide to glue: Make sure you leave a small opening to let the wound drain. Otherwise it could cause an abscess

I use super glue to close up cracks on my fingers when they dry out and split in the winter. It works like a charm!

I am a mechanic and hands would always dry, crack, and bleed. I started wearing nitrile gloves routinely and it made a big difference. They hold in moisture. I think even for an hour or 2 a day would help
