A couple days ago,,, I seen a large flock of crows hanging around the treetops. They seemed to return after their numbers were really down due to the West Nile outbreak. It also affected Bluejays. And of course I spotted a Robin in my yard as well. That means Spring is about here.
Now that also means that with birds comes the possibility of the Avian Flu. Since I can not do much about that,, I just carry on my life as usual. Still let my hens out into the back yard. If the flu virus is shed on my property,, makes no difference if its back yard, or chicken run,,,,, both get a dose of it.
In over 20+ years of keeping chickens, never encountered Avian Flu. Maybe my location is not the ideal flight path for the birds spreading the virus..:idunno I do see Canada Geese that do fly overhead. Usually later in the summer.
If my livelihood was dependent on chickens,, (chicken farmer), or my food needs,, than I would take all precautions possible.
I just cant lock up my 5 chickens inside a coop,, and wait for passover.. (not to be confused with the religious holiday)

Geese fly over daily

I have too many birds to keep locked in the coops.

Praying for God to watch over them. If they get AI, I figure that's a sign that I'm not supposed to have so many.

Same. I just can't keep them locked up for months on end. Especially after just coming through winter where they barely get out much. It's kind of like predators. You know they are out there and there's a chance one might get a bird if they aren't locked up, but the chickens are so much happier out frolicking that I can't take that away from them because of a "what if" so I just pray they will be okay and do what I can to take the steps within reason.
