I'm a chicken neighbor, needing advice...

There is no health risk associated with a properly maintained chicken. I think most rules like this are really about protecting neighbors from people who don't properly maintain their flock. If the noise is tolerable and there's no smell, there's no problem. I know in my town these kinds of rules are enforced on a complaint driven basis. Which gives me every incentive to keep my neighbors happy.

This does not differentiate between the chicken owners home or the neighbors. I believe it has to do with the possible smell and flies. Like many have said you can prevent the smell with proper sanitary disposal, but the rules were made for the worst of us and must (should) be upheld by the best of us. You deserve a high five for being such a good neighbor. If it ever becomes a problem (sound, smell) let them know or it will eat you up over time and ruin a good friendship.

where I live in Missouri, chickens must be kept at least 100 miles away from... California! HAAAHAhahaahaahheeehee hee hee heh

SOOOooo happy to be living in missouri now and NOT in california any more!
I'm in rural MO, and there aren't any rules about it. SO glad I moved here.

one more thing, when you talk to your neighbor, feel free to comment on how beautiful their chickens are, ask about what breed they are and why they chose them, if they're friendly and can you pet one, and if fresh chicken eggs taste any different than store-bought ones. if they're like most folks on BYC, in addition to sweetening them up to move their coop out of your bedroom, a little chicken-love will go a long way towards keeping you stocked up in fresh eggs. especially if they're over the chicken count, or are outlaw on account of the rooster...

and if they're not the BYC types, a casual mention of "gosh, and I was just reading where the local area only permits 6 chickens, and no rooster! not that I *mind* the chickens much, but they're just SO close to my bedroom window... so, do you think that's at least 20 feet?" <smile sweetly>

fresh hush-money eggs taste just as good as those shared generously with a friendly neighbor...

Hush-money eggs! Baa haa haa!
I just spoke with my sweet chicken neighbor, and they are aware of the rooster, and have been keeping him in the laundry room at night, as to not upset the neighbors! Poor Edwin Rooster! We all live super close to each other... Anyway, I didn't know that she was nursing her dying kitty, and had let the cleaning lapse a bit. She thanked me for talking with her instead of the landlords or city, so it's all good.
You chicken peeps are nice people!
Thanks for all the advice- it calmed my nerves, becoming more educated.
