After getting tired of constantly chucking broody hens off the nest and over the fence, I decided on July 20th to let a BO and BA hen to set on 12 eggs. I only have one rooster and 32 hens, so I only expected 2-3 chicks at best. On July 22, I added 7 more eggs to the batch.
No experience at candling, so I left all the eggs under expecting a possible hatch on Sunday...WELL...tonight I go out to lock up the coop and what do I hear...little chirps...
I lift up the BA hen and there is a broken egg, but no chick...
The BO hen had two dry vigorous chicks under her...
Looks like I am going to have a decent hatch percentage. The crosses should be interesting...BOxBA, BOxSLW, BOxLBr and pure BOs.
