I have my button quail on wire as well. They don't seem to mind it. I think it's much easier to keep clean. They do have bowls to dust bathe in and also get some millet to pick on as well as their regular feed.....

I keep my quail on wire, its more sanitary, solid floor tends to ball up the little toes , and there is nothing worse than losing a toe if the owner doesnt realize it is happening,( or doesnt care, I got in 24 buttons with balled toes, took forever to slowly melt the poo off ).
During the winter I kept my Red Golden Pheasant on wire with a hutch back, their enclosure was wet and piled with snow, I didnt want frost biten toes.
it worked out nicely, they are now in their emclosure and loving the freedom pnce agan.
dont let them get you down, ignore them, orleave the nasty site.

I was born a hick, and proud of it. I actually had a neighbor as me if I was a polebilly or a hillpoly (polish hillbilly) I told him either way, thats me. My family actually describes me as their "ozarky" son because I learned to moonshine from a great uncle in the ozarks back in the late 80's.

Monarc, please please please PM me the link to the "other site", i always love a great debate!! When i get my Valley Quail i will keep them on the ground in a landscaped aviary just for pure "eye candy", although it isnt as safe as raising them on wire disease wise, and i will have to worm them often, but i love to see them on our hunting ranch while i am deer hunting and listen to their calls while they are perched on logs and manzanita and juniper, and thats what i want to bring to the flatlands where i live, basically thats why i have wildfowl as well, i am bringing the marsh home to me 365 days a year!!

However, it also isnt nec. to keep them on the ground, either. This was the issue I was posting not what is better over another. Coturnix as you well know were bred from crossing subspecies, they are basically commertial bred birds now, and in most cases don't act like any of their many mixed wild counter parts (not wanting to brood etc). I'd love to one day have some of my coturnix running free in a large fenced in area (freeer than they are now), however that will be pretty pricey for me to do and money is not something I have a lot of right now...so for now most are penned and I am happy with that.
I hope you aren't saying im misinformed... because I have no problem with those who keep their birds on the ground... I don't for serveral reasons one of which involves money, the other of which involves worming and such. I feel that keeping them on wire is more sanitary esp where I live. It's humid and can be disgustingly muddy here at times, for those and many other reasons I enjoy my birds the way I do... the issue of this post was to explain WHY people keep thir birds in wire and the benifits, not to post what's better than the other. It was about some rude person who was calling me names and accusing me of being neglectful to my birds that I eat.. (that i barely eat, but if i did eat them it's none of her business). She too is misinformed about ME...and I just wanted support here.
i dont want a debate going on on here of what's good and better. so please refrain from it or I'll have to ask for this to get locked because it may only lead to spats that are unness. You have your ways we have ours.

I guess I'm a hick. I kept my chicks in a metal rabbit cage that I had used when we rescued a little bunny. It was easier to clean with the poo going through the bottom, and a tray underneath. I had a shoebox in there for them to nest in comfortably at night, but they kept dirtying it with poo and flipped over water, and I had to change boxes several times. I don't see anything really wrong with wire bottoms. If rabbits can live in them... I don't think it's great permanently but that just my preference. I'm not a chicken, so I don't know how they felt about being shifted onto ground.
