I've seen it prescribed for headlice and scabies (in low doses of course) but as far as the pesticide form goes, I would call your city/county waste management and ask them how best to dispose of it. I wonder what the half life of the stuff is?

Malathion is not all that toxic to animals and humans. In fact it is pretty safe. I have used it in powdered form for louse control on livestock and for flea control on dogs. Yes, according to label directions. It also used to be used to spray fruit trees. I don't know if it still is. In the liquid form when diluted and used as a spray it breaks down pretty quickly. Smells bad, though. I can't explain the posted reaction of the horse to malathion. Sounds more like a reaction to parathion. Parathion is very dangerous and toxic. It is a nerve gas derivative.

Malathion has been banned for use in the U.S since I think 1996.

Check with your county, they should have a hazardous waste disposal day, I've always seen them once a month in nice weather.

Until then, double bag it and put it up out of reach of animals and children.

If it were nearly as toxic as some of you seem to think it is, I, my family, my husband's family (from spraying in the orchards), my horses (fly control) cattle and goats (louse control), and dogs (flea control) would have been dead years ago. By the way, several years ago vast areas of California were sprayed with malathion to eradicate a Mediterranian fruit fly. The biggest ill effect besides general hysteria, was that vehicles parked outside overnight had to have the powdery residue washed off. Whatever insecticide was banned it wasn't malathion.
