Hi all!! I just bought a full setup last night with my very first chickens! I have 4 hens. RIR, Black Australorp, Speckled Sussex & Light Sussex. In less than 12 hrs we have our first egg, although it was in the middle of the yard. LOL

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Congrats on your new flock! You have some lovely breeds. Don't be alarmed if you don't get any more eggs for a while. Sometimes the stress of moving to a new home can cause the hens to clamp off the eggs for a couple of weeks. Although some hens to get right back to business. Make sure to put some fake eggs in your nest boxes so they know where you want them to lay.

Enjoy your new birds and we do welcome you to our flock!

X2 to all of this.
I am quite envious of your speckledsussex....they are on my want list and it looks like it'll be next spring before I can get my hands on them (did have a member here offer me some hatching eggs, but not really set up at the moment for the hatching part and prefer to stack the deck in my favor getting sexed hatchling pullets)

Can you get a clearer shot of your flock - I am not seeing a RIR in the mix there and would love a clear look at the bird in question so that we can ID her for you.

I found a 2nd egg! This is so egggciting. I didn't realize chicken poo was so large & gross. What's the easiest way to clean the nesting boxes/coop (daily?) how often do you clean them?

Yay for the second egg.
As iI suspected that is not a Rhode Island Red....looks like a Welsummer from these two pictures -- has she laid either of the eggs and, if so, what color was it?

Yay! Congrats on these 2 eggs! Yes it IS egg-citing!

First, don't let them sleep in the nest boxes. They need to stay clean. So make sure they have a roosting bar to sleep on. A 2x4 with the 4 side up is recommended.

I am a clean freak so I clean when ever I head up to the coop! LOL Some people use the deep litter method if you are using pine shavings. You don't clean all that often but you turn it over or let the chickens turn it over daily. Over time good bacteria grow in this stuff and does help that you don't have to clean the entire thing out all the time. I use sand. Sand absorbs poop smells, repels flies and what is really nice is that you can hose it down in the summer time. Add a fan on the floor and the sand stays really cool. Keeps the birds from panting and over heating. Cool feet mean cooler birds.

Cleanliness is the key to good health in chickens. So it depends on how often you have the time to clean. But try to keep it as clean as possible for you.
