yep, you've got yourself a rooster. You can tell by the comb and wattles and the feathers. His tail feathers are starting to get that sickle shaped. You can also check other feathers, but I don't know which ones or what to look for, but you definitely have a rooster.

just for an update...

Pat has been learning to crow for the last week or so, and it is HILARIOUS.

so far he only crows early in the morning, inside the coop, so its not too bad ( I cant hear him in the house)

still freindly and tame... SO FAR....

Is the best way to 'tame' a rooster by handling him a lot? Our hens just became hens and rooster (maybe roosters!) and I am trying to pay him lots of pick-up attention so he doesn't get fussy with people.... any other suggestions?
He's a Jersey Giant which I hear are pleasant, all things considered.
Thanks!

He's a Jersey Giant? Or do you mean he has a little of that in him? I thought all Jersey Giants were black, though I could be showing some ignorance of another color of them.

Yes, picking roosters up a lot and giving them a lot of attention helps to tame them (especially if they are one of the breeds that is likely to be more docile). Hold them in your lap, pet them, give them special treats to eat from your hand, and be gentle with them (don't scare them in a mean, threatening way -- which I know you wouldn't -- or let young children do things that might hurt them so that humans become a threat). A book I read once mentioned petting the area of the comb and wattles to calm them. Keep their feet from dangling when you pick them up and carry them around; they like to have their feet supported to feel comfortable.

Other people can give you tips on what to do to be friendly with a rooster. It seems he's already friendly with you, so there's no need to use the harsher techniques people use to get a mean roo to back down.

Looks like an EE to me. I don't believe JGs come in that color or have green legs or muffs. Good looking roo though!

I thought ozark said Pat was an Aurecana, but he looks like an Easter Egger to me. Did you mean Araucana perhaps?
