I'm being dumb: what does BBS stand for?

I know it has something to do with color (splash?), and I'm ashamed to admit that I even have Orpington eggs in my 'bator with that written on them by the breeder - day 21 will be as of 3:35 p.m. today!

Only a couple of hours left - that must be soooooooooo exciting, I've never hatched chickens before. I only have two, that's all I have room for.

Enjoy your chicks!

Don't feel bad-I've been involved with raising & exhibiting poultry for nearly 50 years & I never heard the phrase before I started posting on this site a year or so ago. In the rest of the poultry world it's known as a Blue mating, the black & splash being by products.

Okay, so am I understanding correctly that a black mating with a blue results in a possible splash, not a blue on blue? If it's the former, does it matter which color the hen and rooster are? Genetics boggles my mind!

PERSONALLY, I believe that ACRONYMS are useful for a person's PERSONAL notes such as diaries, journals, etc.

I ALSO BELIEVE they are arrogant and counter-productive when used in person-to-person communications.

The goal of communications is COMMUNICATION! Using acronyms in communicating defeats the purpose. No matter that it is supposedly "quicker". It is certainly NOT quicker if you must repeat your communication in order to explain the acronym you used!

I HATE "acronyms"!

Blue genetics is fun. If I remember correctly before the second cup of coffee:

Blue to Black yields blues and blacks.
Blue to blue can yield blue, black and splash.
Splash to splash - all blues.

I don't mind acronyms but think in poultry it can get confusing - because BA could be Black Australorp or Blue Andalusian, or ... so it can get confusing.

PR is that plymouth rock or partridge rock?

But then sometimes common sense is involved. If I headline a post as Partridge Rock and someone wonders what PR in my post means - I'm gonna hand them their sign.

If a header says splash or blue genetics or blue and it includes BBS - duh...

While communication may be the point and misunderstood acronyms a problem - I don't want to spoon feed the dim either.

At a minimum they can at least be made to ASK and then remember what PR is in a post about Partridge Rocks.
