We call them "pullet bullets" and, yes, they will get larger. You gotta give your beginners some time.

My pullets laid small eggs for what seemed like an eternity. They weren't tiny, but were the same size as my bantam's eggs. I was frustrated because the were small for over a month. Then, one day they started getting bigger and now they lay huge eggs.

Not to be a downer...but how come all of you guys are getting eggs and we are not?! One is 11 months (EE) and one is about 24 weeks (RS). We did hang a light today to see if it helps. They eat great and love their coop. But, still no eggs...

We weigh our girls' eggs every day. When Bertha, our original EE, started laying, her eggs were about 1.7 ounces. They are now about 2.1 or so. Lola, the other EE, started laying eggs that were about 1.8 to 1.9. They're consistently 2.3 ounces and up. They have been laying for about 3 months each.

I whole heartedly agree that the size of the hen seems to influence the size of her eggs. But, quite frankly, I have a Production RIR that lays dang near every day, but it is a medium sized egg.
A second production RIR lays a large egg almost every day.

My EE on the other hand lays a large to extra large egg about 4/7 days. Early on I remember her as the chief thief of the three, as she could steal something out of the RIR's beaks faster than a blink of an eye.

All of these birds were hatched in march.

So which is the better "layer" pullet?

It gets back to what your goals for your flock are! Is production more important than size OR DOES SIZE matter? And don't get me wrong, your flock goals can change as well. Mine did.

Also, they *usually* don't start laying in the middle of winter no matter how old they are.

yeah. they get bigger. I kept the eggs that were first laid by my 6 new pullets. The eggs laid now in comparison to their first eggs are very huge !! THEY DO GET BIGGER !!!
