I have been reading on here for the last week trying to figure out what might be wrong with my Molly. I thought maybe ascites, because of her swollen belly and her penguin stance.

I took her out of the coop because she was being picked on by one of the other hens since she was just standing around a lot and seemed not to be doing well. Her comb was a purplish/blue color at this time. Her poop is normal too and has a big appetite.

So I started her on some antibiotics and in 2 days her comb turned back to normal pinkish/red color. I also thought maybe she was internally laying......but I realized that my hens haven't had much sunlight to start laying again, it's been very overcast and raining/snowing up here and I do not supplement their lighting.
She has no interest in the nesting boxes, doesn't try to lay and none of my hens have laid since Oct. (so it's been over 6 months with no eggs).
I have felt her belly and it is very full but not too squishy, she seems to be having a little bit of a hard time walking because she is so bloated like.

I tried to drain her yesterday because maybe she was filled with fluid, well I only got 15ml of a yellowish fluid and it was a little hard to get that out so I tried an area about an inch away and got more of like a bloody/yellow fluid that was really hard to get out, so I stopped. My husband thinks that I would of gotten more out if I tried down lower since I had her on her side (thinking the fluid would of moved to the side she was laying on). So I will try again, she doesn't seem to mined.

Molly will be 3 in June, she is a large New Hampshire Red and has all her feathers still, none have fallen out with the enlarged belly. She eats a lot of food and seems fine other than the penguin stance, full belly.
But I have felt her breast bone sticking out quite a bit and can't feel too much breast meat on her, she does feel heavy still but most likely from the fluid instead. It is hard to tell since she has so much feathers.

I don't think she is internally laying, but I have no idea other than maybe some sort of mass inside her from maybe cancer, but I just don't know..............any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I had this happen to one of my RIRs, not exactly sure how long ago. She acted very similar to what you are describing. I never did quite figure out what was wrong with her, just as I was planning to humanely "move her on" she died on her own. I really hope for a better outcome for you.

I can try to help but I dunno exactly how.

Thank you, I lost one of my RIR last year, never figured out what happened to her either, she didn't have the same problem but there was nothing I could do for her either.
Molly seems in good spirits, trying to walk around and seems hungry and eats a lot, but i don't know what to do about the enlarged belly, I can't put her back in the coop with the others (only one picks on her but she doesn't need that).
So I'm at a lose of what to do for her

Maybe if you have a portable dog pen etc. then you could set it up in your coop to let her be at home yet not susceptible to being picked on. If she seems happy, fabulous. I treat my sick girls with yogurt and other tasties

. Hope she keeps up the good feeling.

I have her in a dog pen/kennel in my office now. I would like to put her back out with the others since they seem to really miss her, but one of my RIR is a real pain and I can't stop her from pecking at her.
Molly looks like a cat the way she tries to eat (almost lying down to eat) and she defiantly has her appetite. I just don't know what else I can do for her, it's sad to see her this way and not be able to do anything to make her feel better.
I give her a lot of treats, milworms, mash potatoes and zucchini, I just got some yogurt, she loves to make a mess with that. Plenty of laying food of course (treats only once a day).

I'm also wondering if there is something else I can give her she's on antibiotics now.

Hmmmmmm.....this one's a toughie.
I also have one mean roo and a particularly weenie victim. I spoil the victim to make the roo feel bad about himself.:p

Sounds like she's pretty happy with you spioling her. Everybody wants a house chicken......right?

Hi guys, sounds like you have already have the hen under stable condition and keep trying the antibiotics but what about a vet? If you don't want to go to the vets or you can't for some reason, why not try to get some booklets or pamphlets from the internet, or pick some up from the vet or even get some help from the place you bought your chicken maybe. i still go regularly to the place where i bought my chickens from when i need help because they are more knowledgeable than me.

It's nice having her in the house except she gets a bit stinky. I think I will take her out to the coop for a supervised visit today, I would leave her out there but I have one hen that is kinda picking on her (trying to take over her pecking order).
She seems to be doing fine, eating a lot (weighed her and she's 10 pounds) don't know if some of that could be fluid or not, but the other New Hampshire is closer to 14 pounds

thought they self regulate how much they eat.

I'm waiting on a call back from a vet, guess he's the only one in town that might treat chickens. I think maybe I didn't go deep enough with the needle when I tried to drain her, some have said that if she is overweight that she could have more fat where I stuck the needle and that is why I didn't get that much fluid from her, so if he is cheep (really tight on money) see if he could treat her.
