After a few horrid attacks, I have learned to have things handy.

If I get a repeat offender, believe me I try really hard to give a dog a second chance, I carry on the farm.

I have found it easier to deal with the problem than continually try to deal with the people who own the offender.

When their dog does not come home, i rarely hear from them. Funny thing, I thought they really cared.

A large caliber revolver will do the trick and the coyotes help me with the cleanup.

I am so sorry too! I agree that dogs are the worst. A possum, coon, or fox will take just one or two at a time, but dogs just kill! We have a pack of dogs (rescues) and we have everyone fenced away. We have to be very alert to keeping wings trimmed though, as the crazy birds will fly out if we don't keep them clipped. We have lost a few young birds this way to our own dogs...that really stinks!
I believe in fences. It keeps all the neighbors dogs, cats, (because of my dogs)and kids out of my stuff. We live in a "neighborhood" where inconsideration is the norm, very few people have respect for other peoples stuff, so our fences keep us from being the grumpy old people with birds!
I hope your survivors continue to do well. I lost a little seabright hen to a hawk last Summer, and it just broke my heart. We had her for five years, and she would come up and hop on your lap and talk to you. We still miss her.

So sorry for the owners loss.I also got rid of dogs and cats that come on my property.Since the attack of my dog by a lose husky I have no patience for lose animals.

I'd make sure to call Animal Control EVERY time you see the dog off-leash or off-property (whatever your local law allows) - just to file a report, even if they don't do anything about the dog. In our area, you have to have "control" of the offending dog in order to have Animal Control do anything. But I have found it is always a good idea to at least file a report EVERY time. It's the squeaky-wheel thing. And if you are sure whose dog it is, and are going to talk to them about it - I'd take an invoice for the cost of the VERY VALUABLE bird! And if they didn't agree to pay you for your losses . . . mention that you don't want to have to take this to Civil Court (or Magistrate's Court-whatever's in your area), but you will if it is necessary, along with the report you have filed with Animal Control. There are some neighbors who will not do anything to control their animals until you 'up the ante'. I have found it better to be proactive when it involves an attack on one of my children or my animals.

After that, if the dog makes another visit - his hiney is mine!

(They had two mean German Shepherds who attacked at different times my 5 year old son, our Golden Retriever, a Quarter Horse, and the pot-belly pig. Not to mention killing other neighbor's animals. These dogs would yelp BEFORE they jumped over their under-ground fence, knowing it was going to shock them like crazy - but it was worth it to attack whatever their target was for the day. Our 7 acres was also fenced in but nothing stopped them. Horrible dogs/horrible neighbors! You couldn't talk to these guys, the man was as mean as his dogs, his wife was cowed down by him and everybody was scared of his anger issues!)

sorry to hear about that,we had alot of slaughters, at least 20 in 3 weeks by a predator unknown, at lest 2 different animals, but now we have it under control. Dont give up yet, we had a wyndotte that disapeared for about 2 weeks, and then as mysteriously as she disapeared,she returned, unharmed. but later on she got killed,but everythings safe now, & thats life!

I'm sorry for your loss. Like most of the posters on this thread I've had my problems with dogs and have learned many hard lessons. Dogs kill for fun and will be back to do it again if the owners are not responsible and keep them tied up or inside. I did go to small claims court ONE time and that was enough for me.

I spoke to one neighbor about his roaming dog (walking around my coop) and told him that if the dog does that again I will shoot to kill. He said that it couldn't have been his dog because 'it is tied up 100% of the time' and if I have to shoot a dog so be it. Well next time I saw the dog I shot in the air and yelled at the top of my lungs 'I missed'. The dog hauled butt and I haven't seen it since.

New Hampshire law says that it is legal to shoot a dog that is harassing, worrying or killing livestock. Chickens are considered livestock and I now shoot to kill. Find out what the laws are in your state and SSS.
