I'm getting the itch. Anyone want to hatch some eggs?

If my australorp, currently setting golf balls, takes it seriously, I'm gonna try hatching 5 mystery chickens and 1 mystery bantam. Am I a little late to join?

welcome! I just finally set mine in the incubator last night. I love mystery eggs! 2 of mine are asstd. Bantams, & i gotta admit, i am the most excited about these silly little 2. The curiosity is really adding to my 1st hatch attempt lol.

Thanks! Yeah, they're interesting all right. The only common thing between them is the father's a cuckoo marans. The mothers are a variety of breeds.

My newest broody is a cuckoo maran... She is about 6 or 7 months old... Now my rule is generally not to allow them to go broody til they are atleast a year old but holy cow, I have never had one so young be so determined and MEAN...She was on the nest last night when I checked before going to bed and was on this morning at 6:30 am when I went out to feed and water the flock... She got off when I threw the scratch grains out but for my hens that's normal and I actually like it, I don't have to mess with her to make sure she is sitting only on the eggs I gave her and I know she is getting up to eat and drink, before I was done with chores she was back on the fake eggs so if she stays all day and tonight I'll replace the fakes for fertile tomorrow morning..

I think I am only going to give her 4 or 5.... Wouldn't ya know it, I got orders for 3 dozen fertile eggs to be picked up Sunday..lol... Its ok tho, for her first time I don't want to overload her..

Oh and Welcome!!!!

Thanks again. My australorp was a year old in April. She first went brooder on a golf ball. I tried to break her, since I had no roosters *no mature ones*, but even in the wire cage, she sat and puffed/growled whenever I walked in. Got some fertile eggs from neighbor up the road. If she's still sitting on golf balls tonight, I'm replacing them with the eggs.

Yup, love the BA"s , that was my first broody too... LOL, she went broody on nothing ...I was so dumb I didn't even know that was what was wrong with her lol... The third time she went broody, DH almost culled her because we thought she was sick... But then I did some learning, found this website and started reading...got ahold of some fertile eggs and a rooster for later fertile eggs and wham, I was hooked!

Looking back, boy was I stupid

LOL...same here! We couldn't figure out why she was acting so strange! I though maybe she was having problems laying eggs because she was in her nest so long!

Then I posted here and people kindly informed me she was fine and broody. Now she is sitting on 6 eggs due to hatch august 14th
