Only egg out of the six was the mystery bantam egg. Does anybody have a guess what this chick might be? It has feathered legs and...blackish skin, I think.

This is the chick at little over a month old, I think 08/30/14 to 10/04/14


Edit: forgot to mention, I still have no idea what breed (crossbreed) it is. Also, Mama has started laying again and pays little attention to the chick, but it still peeps, loudly at times, for her. Is that normal?

Can't help with the bred, but sure is a pretty little one. Hen or roo, can you tell yet? Yes, momma tends to separate from the chick but the chick will still seek her out. Does this chick have hatch mates the same age? That tends to help, as the chicks as they grow and are no longer with the mom will stick together

No, he/she was the only egg out of 6 to hatch.

Awwww...poor little chick! It will get more independent as it gets older and integrates into the flock with the other chickens.

I was having some major computer issue & I couldn't get on BYC for a while. I never got to tell you guys that 8 out of 10 eggs hatched & I know have 8 10 week old chicls that come running with the big girls when they see me coming.

I also had another batch hatch. 5 out of 6. They are 4 days old & little & fuzzy.

I've only had my chicks for a couple months and one of them is broody. I got four eggs from a neighbor and set them under her yesterday. I know that is not many, but it is all she had. I hope at least one or two will hatch. Due to hatch about Thanksgiving, I hope.

Awww...Good Luck! I just gave my girl 5 eggs last time...doesn't take many eggs to make a broody happy

Speaking of eggs… would some kind soul tell me if those chocolate looking beauties are from the Maran breed and do they ever reach the large and extra large size? Remember my offer to entertain telephone calls from any of you fellow chicken nuts (It takes one to know one,,,) any time of day or night on any pretext whatsoever. Doesn't have to be about chickens either, necessarily; we can chat about alternate universes or the Big Bang or training adult tigers or what happened some where in Texas last Wednesday or blanching and freezing vegetables; it doesn't matter at all. 209-327-2068
