I'm having this odd issue with my eyes: anyone know what it might be?

So for a few months now, about every 2-3 weeks, I get these instances of where it appears I'm looking through broken glass that's moving. That's the best way I can explain it. It's happening right now, making it difficult to see to type. I feel completely fine otherwise. The broken/glittering glass is in an oval, around the perimeter..sort of...of where I look. It lasts about 10-15 mins., comes on slowly, and fades slowly.

I've asked around at work, and two people told me that sounds exactly like what they "see" when they are either having or getting ready to get a migraine, but mine is never accompanied by a migraine, much less even a headache.

I've got insurance and should probably have it checked out, but I'm one of those folks who hates to go to the doctor. I have such little time free, and it seems to take HOURS when I go. And if/when I do, is this an opthalmic issue, or a G.P. issue?

Any feedback is appreciated.

Gee, I've never heard of anything like that(fortunately, I have never been cursed with migraines either).

I would start out with an opthamologist and go from there.

I sure hope they can get you diagnosed and help you get rid of this.

YES! ME TOO!!!!
I'm so glad to hear that someone else knows what the heck I'm talking about! Not glad that you're having that bothersome issue though.

I've been having that for a while, couple years. The eye doctor didn't see anything wrong... I guess there is something they can see in you're eye if you see "floaters". But this isn't really a floater.. a shadowy spot, it's odd.
I've described mine though as being kaleidoscopic, like a floating pulsating prism of light.. mine's in a curvey line though, not an oval, and mine lasts longer. But your description of the broken glass is perfect! I just got it again Sunday, the first in a while as I haven't had it lately. I thought maybe I'd be getting a migraine, but it didn't happen. In fact, I don't think it's ever been associated with a migraine for me (and I do get them occasionally).

So anyway, I don't have any answers for you, but I do know what you're talking about. I've been to the eye doctor and regular docs.. they have no idea.

My DH was in the navy for 20 years working in the eye clinic and eye surgery and his first comment was get to a opthamologist now. It is better to check it out and be nothing than ignore it and it be something bad .

The glittery/prism effect can be a type of migraine that has no associated pain , more info from DH.

YES!!! Somewhat kaleidoscopic is the perfect description, but it's not colored - it's clear....ish. Mine, too, seems to be floating, but I don't think mine pulsates.

It's almost gone now. So, it lasted less than 15 mins. this time. No headache, nothing.

I had an odd instance that was different but similar maybe 20 years ago, and I was able to get to the opthamologist immediately (while it was still happening - that instance lasted a good 45 mins.) The dr. took the pressure in my eye and said it was high, but not "off the chart" high. When it was over, he took it again, and it was normal. No explanations or antying.

But this is different. Happening every few weeks, and lasting not very long.

I was really hoping that there might be others who have experienced this and might have some insight. I'm glad I'm not the only one, gaeamama!

Thanks, Phox01, pacetruckguy, alison & easttxchick; I'll make an opthamologist appt. today.
