I am a city girl but moved to the county 20+ years ago. My neighbor has over 30 chickens that constantly surround my house. I never imagined that I would like chickens or become attached to chickens but they quickly became a big part of my life. I've named them all and laugh when they do silly things and cry when they pass away. My husband thinks I'm losing my mind.
Last week I looked out my kitchen window and one of them showed up with a baby. My neighbor and I searched for a couple days and finally found the other 7 babies with a different chicken. We live in the Adirondacks and they are free range chickens. The chicken sleeping in my yard "borrowed" another one and now I have 2 babies and a Momma. My neighbor has 3 Brahmas, 2 Bantams, 2 Silkies and I think the rest are regular chickens. Needless to say I'm new to this and am learning daily about how to feed them and care for them. Hopefully they will head home to the coop as the babies get larger.
I am a senior citizen, retired 2 1/2 years ago and I hate being idle. I sew and do one craft show a year (attendance is approx 30,000 people over 2 days). I also refinish old furniture and sell my items at a local Mercantile. This is all in addition to cooking meals, cleaning house, taking care of our 4 dogs and anything else that no one wants to do. I stay busy!
I am hoping to pick up tips on anything that will help me figure out why our Rooster is so evil toward humans. Red is pretty good with protecting his "flock" but hates my guts. He attacks me (and my husband) at every opportunity. I will post my questions in the appropriate spot once I get the hang of this but wanted to comment on this because it drives me crazy.
I've also attached a picture of Momma and the 1st baby chicken that I thought was adorable! I didn't know babies would sit on the Mom's like this but I'm learning.
Thank you for allowing me to join and I hope to gain a ton of chicken knowledge!
