I'm new here.. Got some baby keets..

I got the new feed for my keets. It is made by Purina.. It is Honor Show Chow Turkey Starter.. It is 30% protein & is medicated with Amprolium.

They only had it in a 50 lb bag so I hope my keets are hungry.. lol

Now I just have to figure out if this with hurt my regular chicks..

I don't own chickens, never have, so I've never raised chicks with keets... but many people that I know have and say the chicks do fine on the higher protein feed, that they will just pass the extra protein without any issues. Some argue that point, but the keets DO need the high protein feed, and they really should be on it for the first 6 weeks. But if you are worried about the chicks on the high protein then after the keets have been on the 30% for 4 weeks you can start mixing in the Start & Grow to use it all up if you want. At 6 weeks I wean mine over to an un-medicated grower feed that has at least 20% protein in it (usually 22% tho) and they stay on that until they are 12 weeks. At that point they can be weaned over to a typical layer feed with 16% protein in it, and can eat that as their main diet the rest of their lives. Even when free ranging they should have free choice access to the layer feed.

Thank you Peeps,

You have been very helpful.. The wife should be home in about an hour. We will change out the paper towels & replace the start & grow with the turkey starter.. We will also tape the little ones foot. I'll post a picture of his/her foot with the new shoe..

Phil

P.S. I'm not afraid of wasting the chick starter.. It wasn't that much.. lol

I finally got the bathtub cleaned up & the new feed done. I am using a different feeder for the turkey starter.. Hopefully they won't kick out as much feed with this one. I put the new feed out & the chicks went crazy. They started to eat like I never feed them before.. The keets were a little more reserved but after a few minutes they joined right in.. I have a pic of that..

I did tape the curled up toe foot. The keet was very good. Once I straightened her foot out she stayed perfectly still until I was finished. Once I put her back in the tub she started to run around. I have never seen her move that good before. Now she is pestering everybody.. I hope this will help to fix her foot. She is very sweet..

Thanks to everybody for the help. Especially you Peeps.. I couldn't have done it without the help.

Thanks

Phil

P.S. Here are the pics..

Some of the babies eating together..

I hope I taped her foot correctly..

She's checking out her new foot.. lol

Here she is sleeping with her buddy.. So cute..

Good job Phil! You may need to change it in a few days for one more treatment, but that really should help fix her foot! As long as it keeps those toes straight and the foot from curling under, the more she uses it in the correct position, the faster she'll recover.

Again, good job
