Hi there,
My name is Megan and I'm new to the BYC community... and still pretty new to owning chickens in general! I came back from being abroad for a year and while I was gone my family had acquired some chickies, which had grown to be pretty much full grown chickens by the time I was home. Now they're roaming around the backyard like they own the place and I love it. I watch 'em for a while every day to try and figure out their habits, I eat their eggs on a daily basis, and I'm always entertained by them when I feed 'em treats. Now I have two topics I'd like to ask about.

First of all, some of our chickens like to climb onto the other ones and sit on 'em! It seems like a bullying thing, but I can't tell if it's really hurting the chicken that is being sat on or not. Has anyone encountered this before? For the most part we just try and stay out of the pecking order and let the girls do their thing, but I want to make sure that they aren't hurting one another when they're doing stuff like that. Any ideas?

Also, since I was gone while these girls were chicks, my dad and I are going to get two more chicks so that I can learn how to raise 'em from young. I've looked through some of the "raising baby chicks" articles here on BYC, so I've got somewhat of an idea of what it'll entail, but does anyone have any advice I should definitely consider? I'd especially like some pointers on how to integrate them with the older flock, and how to make them fairly social with people. I guess I'd like to make them a little more like pets than the older ones are... they come when called to but it's only for treats - I want some chicks that'll hang out with me and maybe even sit on my lap!

Anyway have a great weekend!

from West Virginia! It sounds like the one that is climbing on the others is a rooster and he's doing his "roosterly" duties.

That's great your dad is gonna get some babies for you to learn from. They are really adorable!! Good luck!!!

Welcome to the flock!!

Hello and welcome to BYC!

It sounds like your chickens may be mating, if they're sitting on each other.

Have a look at the Learning Centre on this site for some general tips on raising chicks. If you handle them a lot and preferably on a daily basis they will be tame and friendly, but they do go through a teenage stage where they will be a bit anti-social. Just keep at it and spend time with them, talk to them. I know it sounds silly, but my chickens love it when I talk to them. Giving treats will also help a lot!
When it comes to integration, wait until the chicks are not teeny tiny anymore and put them in a separate area next to the older chickens, so they can see each other before integrating them. There will probably be some pecking and bullying, but unless it gets bad, or someone gets hurt, don't intervene. They will want to sort out their pecking order.

The thing is - we got rid of all our roosters! Supposedly, at least. Is it possible that some of the hens are trying to be dominant since there are no males around??

That climbing on top of chickens thing probably is just because your chook is a rooster. It should be fine unless the backs of the females don't get swollen, cut or infected in any way.

To tame your chicks well, get them used to handling when they are young. If you plan to introduce them, let the chickens work it out. There may be some fighting as the pecking order will be re established. If the fighting gets serious, confine the aggressive birds or the new ones and try again later. Sometimes, because of either breed or age difference, two separate flocks may never join.

Hope this helps!
Don't hesitate to ask any questions on the forum, no matter how silly it may be.
