Hi there,
My name is Megan and I'm new to the BYC community... and still pretty new to owning chickens in general! I came back from being abroad for a year and while I was gone my family had acquired some chickies, which had grown to be pretty much full grown chickens by the time I was home. Now they're roaming around the backyard like they own the place and I love it. I watch 'em for a while every day to try and figure out their habits, I eat their eggs on a daily basis, and I'm always entertained by them when I feed 'em treats. Now I have two topics I'd like to ask about.
First of all, some of our chickens like to climb onto the other ones and sit on 'em! It seems like a bullying thing, but I can't tell if it's really hurting the chicken that is being sat on or not. Has anyone encountered this before? For the most part we just try and stay out of the pecking order and let the girls do their thing, but I want to make sure that they aren't hurting one another when they're doing stuff like that. Any ideas?
Also, since I was gone while these girls were chicks, my dad and I are going to get two more chicks so that I can learn how to raise 'em from young. I've looked through some of the "raising baby chicks" articles here on BYC, so I've got somewhat of an idea of what it'll entail, but does anyone have any advice I should definitely consider? I'd especially like some pointers on how to integrate them with the older flock, and how to make them fairly social with people. I guess I'd like to make them a little more like pets than the older ones are... they come when called to but it's only for treats - I want some chicks that'll hang out with me and maybe even sit on my lap!
Anyway have a great weekend!
