I'm not really. I just wanted 4 hens for eggs and as pets. My Grandmother had chickens when I was a young boy and I've been thinking about getting a few myself for years now. I don't need chickens, I want chickens. So I get four RR chickens and one is a rooster. OK, no problem, I'll just get a few less eggs per week now with the rooster. But, I really wanted more eggs and my Grandmother did have a few different breeds and the Barred Rocks do look really nice and if I can just double my coop size, enlarge my roosts and expand my run a little I could get a couple Barred Rocks and I would be perfectly happy. OK, so the feed store gives my a couple chicks and they turn out to be Black Australorps. I didn't want Austalorps but, they are sweet and I've read they give bunches of eggs so now I'm good. But you know, I still think I should get a couple Barred Rocks like my Grand Mother had when I was young. The feed store will have some Rocks Dec 19 and if I more my run up against my tool shed and open up one side I will have a 12x12 run. That's 144 sqft. Ten feet per bird in the run-I could I could have 14 chickens. 2 more Barred Rocks gives me only 8 chickens. If I clean out my tool shed, sell some of the junk I don't need, I could convert half my shed into a coop. Say 6x12 coop in the shed. 72 sqft of coop. 2 sqft per bird in the coop. I could have 36 chickens. But I don't cause I'm not an addict like a lot of the folks here. OK, so I do like the Blue Rocks I've seen here. Marans would be nice for some dark eggs. A few Buff Orpingtons for their creamy color. I could get a couple EE's for the colored eggs. Anyway, I could always use the entire tool shed for a coop and with the housing crisis we're in now wood prices may fall some so building a bigger run shouldn't cost too much and I do have an extra roll of fencing......gotta go now and clean out the coop and maybe take some measurements..........because I want to, not because I'm some kind of addict....

...Here I am previewing this post and I realize I don't have any Wyandottes. They sure are pretty. Silver Laced, BLRW, Partrige. Would be nice to have a few of those or Delawares or Sussex.

Anyway, I'm off to tend to my chickens. Have a good day.

I kinda resent the title "Addict".... and since this is a "Family Site" I feel the title should be changed.

Makes it sound like I'm an alcoholic or on drugs. Those folks are addicts. I am not.

I just like my chickens. Is that so bad? Is there anything wrong with that?

We all must go through the denial phase before can reach acceptance with ourselves.

On a side note, I don't find the term "addict" questionable. It's tongue-in-cheek. Anyone who posts about chickens on an internet forum is engaging in some sort of compulsive or obsessive behavior, per the Webster dictionary definition:

ad·dict
Etymology: Latin addictus, past participle of addicere to favor, from ad- + dicere to say — more at diction
Date: 1534
1 : to devote or surrender (oneself) to something habitually or obsessively <addicted to gambling>
2 : to cause addiction to a substance in (a person or animal)

Yep, that's how it always starts... I'm trying to figure out how to justify building another small coop just for polish chickens... this place should come with a warning label.

They say the first step to recovery is admitting you have a problem!

And Bawkadoodledoo is right. Here's a quote from the home page.

"But be warned... the BYC Chicken Forum can be VERY addictive!"

If it's OK for Nifty, it's OK for me!

Yeah but it warns that the forum is addictive, it fails to mention that raising chickens is addictive. I'm thinking the equivalent to a Surgeon's General warning needs to be listed under Raising Chickens 101.
