well looks like one of a couple of game chickens
Brownred kinda just eyes not dark enough
redquill but just not red enough
or a mountain sid great looking rooster though just becareful if you breed that rooster and those hens they will be a game chicken and you wont be able to keep more than one rooster because they will fight till death by the way how old is that rooster 6 to 8 months beautiful stag though
Thanks for all the kind remarks!!! I think they look an awful lot like Red Jungle Fowl, but I know nothing of what subtle features need be observed to make that determination.... or if it is even possible without tracing their lineage through previous owners. They look like several varieties of game to my eye and i might just pick out the name I like best -- or make something up. Eventually they will constitute their own breed anyway right? I obviously don't know anything about animal husbandry, and looking at them from a taxonomic perspective presents another set of problems -- upon acknowledging this and a big old fat cochin would be the same species in terms of biology.
I wonder if the breed distinctions among various birds labeled as Game is an artificial construct that represents family lines more so than anything. There is so much morphological diversity among chicken breeds... about like dogs. I can't tell a roundhead from a red jungle fowl... but I can tell a Game from a Barred Rock or a Hamburg without any trouble at all.
Sometime I'll try to get a photo of their father, he has a white plume of downy feathers at the base of his tail and a white stripe along the upper edge of the longest curved tail feathers.
Sorry countryfiedgirl45, I don't have any chicks (of this breed)... or even any fertile eggs, all the hens are just coming off of being broody.
Mahonri... I always thought the term chicken legs was used in a pejorative sense, yet you seem to be into it... only at BYC lol

I have a feeling he is not going to get along with other roosters, I have six Sumatrans that have yet to be turned out to free range, I think they are only around six or seven weeks old or so. Will a Sumatran rooster and this guy not get along?... I have a very large yard if that helps.
Well that is according to the breeding this guy has if he is a pure bred game chicken he will fight to death if they will fight with him that is the big question I hope they wont he looks to be in the 8 months old so he will start fighting soon so keep an eye out I have had a bad experience one time with some game stags that i raised from eggs they was about 8 months old and had never fought hard just the normal play fights and one cool day in october i went to work and came home with 5 dead 2 badly wounded and 1 just beat up some all laying within a 20foot circle so just keep your eye on him and the others if you let them run together dont forget alot of it depends on his genetics.
